Chapter 5 - The Mask SlipsJulian whipped his head around, staring at Vanessa in absolute shock. "Vane, shut up! What are you doing?"

"Stop whispering like a coward, Julian!" Vanessa snapped, her voice losing every trace of the fragile, trembling vulnerability she had weaponized just hours before. She strode into the kitchen, tossing her hair over her shoulder with undisguised contempt. "She knows. Good. Let's stop pretending. You haven't loved Claire in years. You told me yourself on our trip to Nantucket that living with her felt like rooming with an auditor."
I didn't yell. I didn't lunge across the island to scratch her eyes out. Instead, I stood up slowly, smoothing the front of my silk blouse.
"An auditor," I repeated, letting out a calm, melodic chuckle. "Well, that auditor just balanced your books, Vanessa."
Vanessa frowned, a flicker of unease touching her eyes. "What are you talking about?"
"I’m talking about the Cambridge condo," I said, stepping around the counter and walking toward them. "You think Julian bought it for you out of the goodness of his little surgeon heart? Oh, honey. Read the fine print on page six of that deed."
Julian snatched the papers off the counter, flipping frantically through the pages until his eyes locked onto a specific clause. His face turned the color of curdled milk.
"No," Julian choked out, his hands trembling violently. "This... this isn't what we signed."
"What did you sign, Julian?" Vanessa demanded, grabbing the corner of the paper. Her eyes scanned the text, and the color drained from her face as well.
"The mortgage isn't just in your name, Vanessa," I smiled sweetly, tilting my head. "It’s 100% in your name. Julian’s name was quietly removed last week through a clever little quitclaim deed I had our family attorney draw up while you two were busy planning your little future. Legally, Julian has no ownership stake in that property whatsoever. But you? You are the sole guarantor on a high-interest commercial loan tied to Julian’s professional malpractice insurance line of credit."
Vanessa froze. The silence in the kitchen was so heavy you could hear the hum of the refrigerator.

"You can't do that," Vanessa whispered, her voice shaking with genuine, unscripted terror. "That's—that's fraud!"
"Oh, no, sweetie," I replied, my voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "That's business. Julian signed the transfer authorization form last month when he was half-asleep after a thirty-hour shift. He didn't read the attachments. Surgeons are notoriously sloppy when they trust their wives too much."
