Chapter 2 - The Fifteen-Year Ghost

Fifteen Years Later.
The city had grown taller, darker, and infinitely more unforgiving.
Lena sat at the edge of a unstable plastic chair in the back room of Vance Enterprises—a massive, multi-million-dollar fast-food empire. Arthur Vance had done well for himself over the past decade and a half. He had moved from a single hotdog cart to a fleet of trucks, and eventually into a corporate franchise by ruthlessly exploiting his workers, cutting corners, and stepping on anyone who got in his way.
And Lena? Fortune had not been kind to her. After being fired that fateful morning, she had fallen into a spiral of poverty. She had lost her apartment, spent months in shelters, and eventually scraped together enough to survive by taking the lowest-paying, most backbreaking cleaning jobs in the city.
Now, at forty-seven years old, her hands were calloused, her back was constantly aching, and her hair was streaked with gray. By a cruel twist of fate, the cleaning agency she worked for had assigned her to the corporate headquarters of the very man who had ruined her life fifteen years ago.
"Move it, old woman!" a supervisor barked, throwing a heavy bucket and mop at Lena’s feet. "The new CEO is arriving today. If there is a single smudge on the marble floor of the executive suite, you’ll be out on your ears without a dime."
"I'm on it," Lena whispered, her voice devoid of the fiery spark she once possessed. She bent down, her joints popping painfully, and began to scrub the pristine white floors of the penthouse office.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the executive suite burst open. Arthur Vance strode in, now older, portly, and wearing an expensive tailored suit that couldn't hide his vulgar nature. He was sweating profusely, surrounded by a dozen anxious lawyers and executives.
"I don't care what it takes!" Arthur roared at his legal team. "Apex Holdings bought out 51% of our shares overnight. Who the hell is their CEO? How did a shadow corporation manage to hostile-takeover my company without me knowing? Find out!"
"Sir, we tried," one lawyer stammered, trembling. "The CEO of Apex Holdings is shrouded in absolute secrecy. All we know is that she is a young tech prodigy who recently moved her operations here. She’s ruthless. She buys failing or corrupt businesses, guts the management, and rebuilds them. And she requested a personal meeting with you today."
Right at that moment, the private elevator chimed.
The doors slid open. A woman stepped out, and the entire room fell into a dead, suffocating silence.
She was stunning, radiating an aura of absolute power and cold authority. She wore a sharp, midnight-black designer pantsuit. Her long brown hair was tied back in a flawless, professional ponytail. Her eyes, sharp as diamonds, scanned the room, instantly commanding respect. Behind her walked two towering bodyguards.
Arthur immediately wiped the sweat from his forehead and forced a oily, submissive smile. "Welcome, welcome to Vance Enterprises! I am Arthur Vance, the founder. It is an honor to finally meet the genius behind Apex Holdings. Miss...?"
The young woman didn't look at Arthur's outstretched hand. Instead, her sharp gaze swept across the room, ignoring the executives, ignoring the luxury, until her eyes landed on the corner of the room.
There, kneeling on the floor with a dirty rag in her hand, was Lena.
The billionaire CEO froze. The cold, impenetrable mask on her face suddenly cracked, revealing a flash of deep, raw emotion.

Arthur noticed her gaze and immediately turned on Lena, his face twisting into a scowl. "Hey! You! Cleaning lady! Get your ugly buckets and get out of here! Can't you see we are having a high-level corporate meeting? You're bringing down the property value just standing there!"
The CEO’s voice cut through the air like a razor blade. "Touch her, or speak to her like that again, Mr. Vance, and I will liquidate your entire life's work before the sun sets today."
