Chapter 4 - The Art of Ruin

Arthur trembled, his hands shaking so violently he had to shove them into his pockets. "You can't do this! I built this company from nothing! I have contracts, I have legal protections! You might own the majority shares, but you can't just destroy a profitable business out of a petty childhood grudge!"

"Watch me," Maya replied with a terrifyingly calm smile. She turned to her assistants. "Bring them in."

The heavy doors opened again, and three men in dark suits entered, carrying thick briefcases. Arthur’s head of finance gasped upon seeing them. "Sir... those are auditors from the Internal Revenue Service and investigators from the Department of Labor."

Maya walked back over to Lena, gently taking the older woman’s hand and pulling her up from the floor. She led Lena to the luxurious leather CEO chair and forced her to sit down.

"For the past three years, my firm has been quietly documenting everything your company does, Arthur," Maya stated, pacing around the room. "Tax evasion through offshore shell companies. Flagrant violations of labor laws. Forcing employees to work overtime without pay. Shorting the pensions of retired workers. And, my personal favorite: using expired, sub-par ingredients in your food trucks to save a few pennies, poisoning lower-income communities."

Arthur’s face went completely white. "That’s... that's a lie! You have no proof!"

"We have all the proof," Maya’s lead attorney stepped forward, slapping a massive binder onto the conference table. "We have internal emails, bank statements from the Cayman Islands, and testimonies from twenty-four whistleblowers. The federal government has already frozen all your personal and corporate bank accounts as of five minutes ago."

Arthur staggered backward, bumping into his own desk. "No... no, this can't be happening. My money... my life..."

"You are bankrupt, Arthur," Maya said coldly. "And by tomorrow morning, the indictments will be unsealed. You won't just lose your wealth. You are going to prison for a very, very long time. The system you used to crush soft hearts is finally going to crush yours."

Arthur looked around the room frantically, looking for an ally among his executives and lawyers, but they all turned their heads away, terrified of being dragged down with him. Finally, his eyes landed on Lena, who was sitting silently in the grand chair, watching the destruction of her former tormentor.

In a desperate, pathetic move, Arthur threw himself onto his knees, crawling toward Lena’s feet. "Lena! Please! Talk to her! You were always a good person! You have a soft heart! Tell her to stop! I'll give you your job back! I'll make you a manager! I'll pay you all the back wages I owe you! Please, don't let her ruin me!"

Lena looked down at the man who had fired her in the freezing cold, the man who had left her to starve and lose everything. Her expression wasn't one of anger or malice. It was simply empty.

"You told me fifteen years ago that soft people get crushed in this city, Arthur," Lena said softly, her voice echoing in the large room. "It looks like you were right."
