Chapter 5 - The Stolen Bloodline

As security guards dragged a screaming, weeping Arthur Vance out of the executive suite, the room emptied out. The lawyers and executives scrambled to save themselves, leaving only Maya and Lena in the massive penthouse office.
The heavy silence returned, but this time, it was filled with an overwhelming emotional weight.
Lena stood up from the luxury chair, looking at the young, powerful woman before her. "Maya... I don't know what to say. What you did... it’s justice. But you didn't have to go through all this trouble for a forty-seven-year-old cleaning lady."
Maya walked over to her, her eyes soft, filled with a deep, profound yearning. "Lena, there is something you need to know. Something I only discovered myself a few months ago when I began digging into the records of the orphanage I grew up in."
Maya reached into her inner pocket and pulled out an old, faded piece of paper. It was a birth certificate, yellowed with age.
"When I was six, I didn't know who my parents were. I thought I was abandoned on the streets because nobody wanted me," Maya said, her voice trembling. "But when my legal team investigated the shelter system and the illegal adoption rings operating in this city twenty-one years ago... they found something. A young, twenty-two-year-old woman had her newborn baby girl wrongfully, illegally taken from her by a corrupt social worker because she couldn't afford the hospital bill."
Lena’s heart stopped. Her breath hitched, and the entire world seemed to tilt on its axis. Twenty-one years ago... she had given birth to a baby girl in a charity hospital. They told her the baby had died of complications hours after birth. She had never even been allowed to hold her. She had wept for years, a grief that had broken her spirit and left her vulnerable to people like Arthur.
"The mother’s name on the unredacted birth record..." Maya whispered, tears streaming down her face as she handed the paper to Lena. "...was Lena Rostova."
Lena’s hands shook so violently the paper nearly fell. She looked at the name. Mother: Lena Rostova. Child: Baby Girl Rostova.
"When I stood next to your hotdog cart fifteen years ago," Maya cried, her corporate armor completely gone, revealing the little girl inside, "neither of us knew. We were two strangers broken by the same cruel city. But you didn't just feed a hungry child that day, Lena. You fed your own daughter."
Lena let out a choked, broken sob. The puzzle pieces of a lifetime of tragedy instantly fell into place. The strange, painful twist she had felt in her chest when she first saw that little girl... it hadn't just been sympathy. It had been the primal, unbreakable bond of a mother recognizing her own flesh and blood.

"My baby..." Lena sobbed, throwing her arms around Maya.
Maya clung to her mother, burying her face in Lena’s worn, faded uniform. The two women held each other in the middle of the multi-million-dollar penthouse, weeping for the fifteen years they had lost, for the hunger they had suffered, and for the miraculous grace that had brought them back together.
