Chapter 9 - Edge of the Abyss

An hour later, the police sirens blared outside the estate gates. Federal agents stripped my mother and Julian of their freedom, dragging them into the cold night in handcuffs. The high-society guests were cleared and released, leaving the grand estate echoing with empty quiet.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the ballroom, looking out over the midnight skyline of New York.

Sophia walked over, holding two warm cups of tea. She handed one to me, her eyes reflecting the soft warm light of the lingering candles.

"Ethan is asleep upstairs," she said softly. "Lily is right beside him, holding his hand."

"I owe you everything, Sophia," I said genuinely, looking at her with a depth of emotion I hadn't felt in a decade. "You protected my son. You kept Elena’s truth alive. From tonight on, you and Lily are family. You will never work as a housekeeper another day in your life."

Sophia smiled, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I just wanted my sister's family to be safe."
