Chapter 16 - The Living Dead

We moved through the pitch-black tunnels beneath the icy water of the bay, guided only by night-vision optics and the sound of distant generator hums.

After twenty minutes of silent crawling, the brick tunnel gave way to pristine, white modular walls—a high-tech laboratory built deep inside the hollowed-out foundations of the old naval base.

Vincent and I dropped two patrol guards silently, slipping through the bio-hazard airlocks into the facility's main sector.

The central bay was massive, filled with glowing glass containment tanks, medical monitors, and rows of heavily armed Vanguard mercenaries.

In the center of the room, suspended in a glass isolation chamber, sat Ethan. He was conscious, staring terrified at the glowing sensors attached to his arms.

"Ethan," I whispered, my heart aching.

I raised my weapon to shoot the chamber lock, but a voice echoed over the facility's intercom system—a voice that froze the blood in my veins.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Dominic. The glass is pressurized. One bullet will flood the chamber with toxic neuro-agents."

I turned slowly toward the observation deck overlooking the floor.

Standing behind the reinforced glass was a woman dressed in a crisp white lab coat. Her dark hair was pulled back, her posture commanding and absolute.

It was Elena.

My wife. The woman I had buried seven years ago.
