Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the LedgerVictor Romano stood in the damp subterranean basement beneath the Moretti vineyard, the harsh glare of a single overhead bulb casting long, skeletal shadows across the stone walls. Before him lay an open iron lockbox—the one salvaged from the secondary wall safe in Sophia’s private Manhattan apartment an hour before the engagement party even began.

Victor’s fingers, calloused from decades of handling firearms and wire-cutters, flicked through a stack of yellowed hospital birth registries, encrypted telegraph strips, and a series of high-resolution photographs taken covertly over the last six months.

The photos showed Sophia meeting Julian Vance in abandoned train stations across Zurich, Boston, and Geneva. In every frame, Sophia looked exhausted, desperate, handing over thick manila envelopes filled with Moretti shipping manifests and security codes. But the final photograph in the stack made Victor’s breath hitch in his throat.

It was an ultrasound print dated three days prior. Attached to it was a handwritten medical note on the letterhead of a private Swiss clinic: Patient stable. The bone marrow match is 99.4% compatible. The procedure cannot proceed without the biological father’s direct authorization or the legal surrender of the Moretti estate holdings.

Victor pulled out his encrypted satellite phone and dialed a direct, secure line to the study upstairs.

"Boss," Victor said the moment the line connected.

"Talk," Alessandro’s voice came back instantly, cold and steady.

"The lockbox from her Manhattan flat yielded more than communication logs," Victor said, his eyes scanning the medical report again. "Boss... Sophia wasn't selling our shipping routes to Vance. She was paying him ransom. Ransom for a child. A child carrying your exact genetic markers. A four-year-old girl named Elena."

Upstairs in the study, the silence became absolute. Alessandro looked slowly from the phone in his hand to Sophia, who had collapsed onto her knees beside the velvet chair, her face buried in her hands.
