Chapter 9 - The Final GambitThe silence in the study stretched so tight that the hum of the small desk lamp sounded like a jet engine. Alessandro’s finger tightened fractionally around the trigger guard of his Glock.

"You make one fatal assumption, Julian," Alessandro said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a terrifying stillness that made even the professional operatives shift uneasily on their boots.

Julian paused, his index finger resting lightly on the trigger of his Sig Sauer. "And what assumption is that, boy?"

"You assume my father didn't leave a secondary contingency plan," Alessandro said. He reached slowly into the inner pocket of his tuxedo and pulled out the small piece of blank paper with the single black dot that Julian had left under the dessert plate.

Julian’s eyes flicked to the paper, and for the first microsecond since he entered the room, his mask of absolute control slipped. A tiny twitch betrayed the corner of his left eye.

"You couldn't have decoded that," Julian muttered. "The encryption key was destroyed in Geneva twenty years ago."

"My father didn't use Geneva encryption," Alessandro said, stepping forward one slow, measured pace. "He used the ledger from the Moretti maritime fleet—the one written in the old dialect of Palermo. That black dot isn't a signature, Julian. It's a geographic coordinate. Latitude forty-four. Longitude nine."

Before Julian could fire, the entire floor of the study shuddered violently. A low, subterranean roar shook the foundations of the estate, followed by the dull, concussive boom of a controlled explosive charge detonating deep beneath the eastern cliffs.

The lights in the study flickered and died, plunging the room into instant, pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by the pale moonlight streaming through the high arched windows.
