Chapter 4 - THE HEALING TOUCHWhile the storm raged in the underworld, the atmosphere on the third floor of the DeLuca Manor began to change.

With the poisoned pillow removed and the toxic smoothies stopped, six-year-old Lucas’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous.
Within four days, the color returned to his pale cheeks. His stomach pain vanished. He was able to sit up in bed, eat solid food, and laugh for the first time in six months.
On a sunny Thursday afternoon, Sophia was cleaning the master hallway upstairs when she heard soft laughter coming from Lucas’s open bedroom door.
She stepped quietly to the doorway and looked inside.
Lucas was sitting on his plush carpet, surrounded by toy wooden blocks and race cars. Sitting right beside him was three-year-old Emma, wearing a bright yellow sundress, carefully building a tall tower out of red blocks.
"No, Emma! Put the blue one on top!" Lucas giggled, his voice light and full of life. "It makes it taller!"
"Blue one!" Emma cheered, carefully balancing the block on top.
Sophia felt tears spring to her eyes. For months, this room had been a dark, silent place of sickness and fear. Now, it was filled with the warm sound of childhood joy.
"Sophia?"
Sophia turned around quickly. Lorenzo was standing behind her in the hallway, wearing a dark grey suit, his tie loosened at his collar. He looked tired, but his eyes were focused on the two children playing inside.
"Mr. DeLuca!" Sophia whispered, stepping back nervously. "I'm sorry—I was getting ready to fetch Emma—"
"Leave them," Lorenzo said gently, stopping her with a light touch on her shoulder.
His hand was broad and warm, sending a strange, electric shiver down Sophia’s spine. She looked up into his handsome, rugged face, noticing the sharp lines of his jaw and the deep sincerity in his hazel eyes.
"Lucas hasn't laughed like that since his mother died," Lorenzo murmured softly, watching his son smile. "Your daughter didn't just save his life, Sophia. She brought him back to me."
"Emma loves him," Sophia whispered softly. "She thinks of him as her big brother."
Lorenzo turned his head to look down at Sophia.

"And what about you, Sophia?" Lorenzo asked softly, his voice dropping into a intimate, husky register. "How do you feel about living in a house full of shadows?"
Sophia swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her ribs. "It doesn't feel like shadows anymore, Mr. Lorenzo. Not when you're here to protect it."
