Chapter 5 - THE SHADOW AT THE GATETwo weeks passed.

The threat of Don Matteo Moretti hung over the city like a dark storm cloud. Lorenzo’s security teams had seized three of Moretti’s primary shipping warehouses, cutting off his financial supply lines, but Matteo had gone into hiding in the underground network of Chicago.
Inside the DeLuca Manor, life had settled into a beautiful, domestic routine.
Sophia was no longer treated as a simple housekeeper. Lorenzo had moved her and Emma into a luxurious guest suite on the second floor, complete with a private balcony overlooking the rose gardens.
One evening, after the children were asleep, Sophia sat on the glass terrace drinking a warm cup of chamomile tea.
The soft sound of footsteps echoed behind her.
Lorenzo walked out onto the terrace, holding a bottle of aged red wine and two crystal glasses. He had discarded his suit jacket, wearing a black fitted dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the dark, intricate tattoos covering his forearms.
"May I join you?" Lorenzo asked.
"Of course," Sophia smiled, adjusting her cardigan.
Lorenzo poured two glasses of wine, handing one to her. He leaned against the stone railing, looking out over the moonlit estate.
"The court officially finalized Lucas’s sole guardianship over the Moretti ports today," Lorenzo announced softly. "He is completely safe legally."
"That's wonderful news, Lorenzo," Sophia said warmly.
Lorenzo looked at her, his eyes dark and intense under the moonlight. "I haven't thanked you properly, Sophia."
"You don't owe me anything," she replied gently. "You've given us a safe home, food, and kindness."
"I owe you everything," Lorenzo insisted, stepping closer until he was standing right beside her chair. He reached out, his long fingers gently capturing her hand. "Before you and Emma came into this house, I was a ghost. I was fighting a war, watching my son fade away, waiting for the end."
Sophia looked up at him, her dark eyes shining in the moonlight.
"You saved my family, Sophia," Lorenzo whispered, leaning down until his warm breath brushed against her lips. "Both of you."
Sophia’s breath caught. "Lorenzo..."
"Tell me to stop," Lorenzo growled softly, his thumb caressing her soft jawline. "Tell me you don't want this, and I will step back."
Sophia didn't tell him to stop.
May you like
Instead, she leaned up, closing the tiny distance between them, pressing her soft lips against his.
The kiss was slow, deep, and intoxicating. Lorenzo wrapped his broad arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his broad chest, kissing her with a fierce, protective passion that made her knees weak.
