Chapter 10 - Blood and RedemptionThe digital countdown on the monitor blinked down to zero.

00:00.
BOOM.
The shockwave hit the panic room like an earthquake, blowing the heavy oak sliding panel off its hinges in a cloud of plaster dust, smoke, and flying splinters. The lights in the panic room flickered and died, plunging the small space into absolute darkness, illuminated only by the red glow of emergency smoke lights.
Through the settling dust, a silhouette stepped over the shattered doorway.
Victor raised his assault rifle, coughing as he scanned the smoke-filled room.
“Mara! It’s over! Give up!” Victor shouted, stepping inside.
He didn't see the movement in the corner.
A shadow dropped from the upper ventilation grate directly behind Victor—silent, brutal, and blindingly fast.
Adrian.
Before Victor could turn, Adrian slammed a heavy tactical combat knife directly into the meat of Victor’s shoulder, spinning him around before slamming him face-first into the concrete wall. The assault rifle clattered out of Victor’s hands.
Victor gasped, sliding down the wall, blood pooling beneath him. He looked up, his eyes wide with absolute horror as Adrian stepped into the dim emergency light.
Adrian’s clothes were soaked in rain and aviation fuel. His hands were bare, his knuckles bruised, and his expression was that of a man who had ripped apart heaven and hell to get back to his apartment.
“V-Victor... the commission...” Victor choked out, blood bubbling on his lips. “They were supposed to... to kill you...”
“The commission in New York sent a dozen men to meet me at Teterboro Airport,” Adrian said, his voice a low, murderous hiss. “I fed them to the FBI, took their private jet, and flew back here in record time just to kill you myself.”
Adrian drew his pistol, pressing the barrel against Victor’s forehead—just as he had done to Dante months ago.
“You broke my trust, Victor. You touched what is mine,” Adrian whispered.
“Wait!” Victor screamed, looking past Adrian toward the corner of the room. “Mara! Tell him not to—!”
Adrian pulled the trigger.
The gunshot echoed through the ruined estate like a clap of thunder.
Silence rushed back into the room.
Adrian stood motionless for a long moment, breathing heavily, before dropping the empty weapon and turning around. His dark eyes scanned the dark corners of the room until they found Mara standing by the desk, holding the Sig Sauer steady with both hands, her breath coming in shallow gasps.
Slowly, Adrian walked toward her.
He didn’t care about the blood on his coat or the carnage behind him. He closed the distance between them, reached out, and gently took the heavy pistol out of her trembling hands, setting it aside on the desk.
Then, he pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her hair.
“Are you hurt?” he whispered, his voice cracking for the first time since she had met him.
May you like
“I’m fine,” Mara breathed, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck, burying her face against his chest. “I’m fine, Adrian.”
Outside, the first police sirens began wailing in the distance, cutting through the freezing Chicago night. But for the first time, neither of them flinched. The storm had come, the empire had bled, and the king and his queen were still standing.
