Chapter 8 - The Trust FallThe calm, however, was merely the eye of a much larger storm.

True power never goes unchallenged for long, and the true test of an empire isn’t how it conquers, but how it survives betrayal from within.

It happened on a rainy Tuesday evening. Adrian was in New York attending a high-level commission summit to consolidate his control over the Eastern Seaboard, leaving Mara under the protective custody of Victor and Sloane in the Lincoln Park estate.

Mara was in the estate’s private medical archive, reviewing supply inventories, when the overhead lights flickered and died.

Emergency backup generators kicked in a second later, bathing the hallways in an eerie, pulsing red glow.

Sloane appeared at the doorway of the archive instantly, her tactical submachine gun raised and ready.

“We have a breach,” Sloane barked, her voice clipped and devoid of panic. “Intruders in the sub-basement. They bypassed the biometric locks.”

Mara’s blood ran cold. “How?”

“Only one person outside of Adrian has the master override codes,” Sloane said grimly, grabbing Mara’s arm. “Victor.”

The betrayal hit Mara like a physical blow. Victor—the man who had served Adrian with fanatical loyalty for a decade, the man who had driven her to the estate on her first terrifying morning.

“Where is he taking us?” Mara asked as Sloane dragged her down a narrow, reinforced service corridor behind the estate’s grand staircase.

“Not us. You,” Sloane corrected, pushing Mara into a hidden panic room behind a sliding oak panel. It was stocked with communications gear, weapon caches, and a live CCTV feed of the main estate. “Victor didn’t turn for money. He turned because Adrian’s mercy is rotting the syndicate from the inside. He thinks getting rid of you breaks Adrian.”

Mara stared at the monitor as the screen split into multiple views.

On camera three, Victor stood in the grand foyer, surrounded by a dozen masked mercenaries wearing the insignia of the Russian Bratva. They had taken the estate guards out silently.

“Sloane, you’re coming with me, right?” Mara asked, grabbing the edge of the steel door.

Sloane shook her head, a cold, lethal smile touching her lips.

“No, Miss Ellis. My job is to make sure Adrian has a queen left when he gets back.” Sloane slid the heavy steel door shut, locking it from the outside.
