Chapter 4 - Chains of SilkFor the next three days, Mara’s world shrunk to the boundaries of the Lincoln Park estate.

She was given a guest suite on the second floor—a room larger than her entire apartment, featuring a king-sized bed, a marble bathroom, and a wardrobe filled with designer clothes that still bore store tags. A personal detail guard, a towering woman named Sloane who spoke in clipped military sentences, stood outside her door twenty-four hours a day.

Adrian was rarely seen. He spent his days and nights locked in his subterranean command center, waging a silent, brutal war against the fracturing factions of the Vale empire. Reports of burning warehouses, mysterious disappearances, and midnight shootouts filtered through the city’s underground channels, though the mainstream media called it gang warfare.

Mara paced the length of her luxurious prison, feeling like a golden bird in a gilded cage.

On the fourth evening, the heavy oak door swung open without a knock. Adrian entered, looking exhausted. The dark circles under his eyes spoke of sleepless nights, and his movements were stiff, though he carried himself with his customary lethal grace.

He set a bottle of expensive scotch and two crystal glasses on the coffee table.

“You’re eating enough?” he asked, glancing at the untouched tray of food by the window.

“I’m too stressed to be hungry,” Mara snapped, pouring herself a cup of water instead. “How long am I supposed to play the pampered hostage, Adrian? I have a job. I have patients at Mercy Harbor who actually need me.”

“Mercy Harbor has been temporarily closed due to a ‘structural gas leak,’” Adrian replied smoothly, pouring a finger of scotch.

Mara froze, her glass halfway to her mouth. “What did you do?”

“I relocated your department head, gave your patients private care under different names, and ensured your apartment was scrubbed clean of any forensic trace,” Adrian said, his voice entirely devoid of remorse. “Dante checked your building this morning. It’s clean. As far as the syndicate knows, you vanished into thin air.”

“You are terrifying,” she whispered, staring at him in horror and reluctant awe.

“I am pragmatic,” Adrian corrected, walking over to stand beside her. He looked down into her eyes, his expression softening just a fraction. “Dante is making his move tomorrow night. A summit at an abandoned rail yard downtown. He thinks he’s luring me into a trap.”

“And you’re walking right into it?”

“I’m ending it,” Adrian said simply. He reached out, his knuckles brushing against her cheek. A shiver ran down Mara’s spine, entirely unrelated to fear. “I need you to do something for me, Mara. Something that requires your specific set of skills.”

Mara pulled back, crossing her arms defensively. “I am not a soldier, Adrian. I’m a nurse.”

“Exactly,” he replied, his eyes gleaming with dark intent. “And when the shooting stops tomorrow night, there are going to be men bleeding on both sides who need to stay alive long enough to tell me who funded Dante’s coup.”
