Chapter 5 - THE CONFESSION IN THE STUDYUpstairs in the private study, the air was thick with the scent of old leather, bourbon, and expensive pipe tobacco. The room was shrouded in darkness save for the amber glow of a single desk lamp illuminating the massive mahogany writing desk where Victor Blackwood sat in total silence.

The heavy oak door creaked open.

Serena stood in the doorway, her hands trembling as she clutched a heavy silver candlestick like a club. Her designer gown was stained with sweat, her hair coming loose from its elaborate updo.

"You’re alone," she whispered, her voice dropping its aristocratic veneer entirely, revealing the desperate, hardened edge of a survivor who had crossed a line she could never uncross. "Where is Marco? Did your little lapdog get himself killed in the cellar?"

Victor didn’t look up from the desk. He was slowly turning a heavy gold signet ring around his finger—a ring bearing the Blackwood family crest.

"Marco is handling the rats," Victor said softly. "Which leaves us, Serena. Just you and me. Exactly twenty minutes before the local authorities arrive, and forty minutes before the federal task force I called bypasses local jurisdiction to sweep this entire estate."

Serena froze. A dark, cynical laugh escaped her lips, sharp and brittle. "Federal task force? Oh, Victor. You always did love playing God. But you’re too late. The transfer of the Blackwood Holdings overseas was finalized at 11:59 PM. Even if you kill me right now, my offshore accounts are locked behind cryptographic layers that not even your forensic accountants can crack."

"Money," Victor muttered, finally raising his head. His eyes were cold, bottomless pits of absolute fury. "You poisoned my daughter over money?"

"Not just money, Victor," Serena sneered, stepping further into the light and tossing the silver candlestick onto the Persian rug. "Power. Survival. Do you think I enjoyed playing the devoted family friend while you spent ten years drowning in self-pity over Elena? Every time you looked at Chloe, you looked at a ghost. I built this empire with you while you were mourning! I washed the blood off your hands after the corporate raids, and how did you repay me? You rewrote the trust last week. You left eighty percent of the voting shares to Chloe upon her eighteenth birthday, with Moreno as executor. You cut me out completely."

Victor stood up slowly, towering over the desk. "Because I found out last month that you were skimming from the foundation accounts. Elena suspected you from the start. That’s why your thugs tampered with her brakes ten years ago on October 12th."

Serena’s face twisted into an ugly, triumphant smirk. "And what are you going to do about it, Victor? Shoot me? Go ahead. But remember—if I go down, I leave behind a dead man's switch that releases every single offshore bribe, political payoff, and illegal acquisition document straight to the Department of Justice. The Blackwood name dies tonight either way."
