Chapter 9 - THE WHISPERS IN THE NURSERYThe digital clock on the bedside table read 3:14 AM.

The storm outside had settled into a steady, mournful drizzle, washing away the mud and blood from the gravel driveway below. Inside the master nursery on the third floor, the air smelled faintly of lavender and antiseptic.
Little Chloe Blackwood lay curled beneath a heavy silk quilt, her breathing soft and even. The dark circles under her eyes were beginning to fade, her pale cheeks returning to a healthy, natural warmth.
Dr. Moreno sat quietly in an armchair beside the bed, thumbing through a medical chart, while Victor stood by the window, staring out into the sprawling, darkened acreage of the estate.
"She’s going to make a full recovery, Victor," Moreno said quietly, not looking up from his clipboard. "Another forty-eight hours of intravenous chelation therapy and all traces of the organophosphate will be completely purged from her system."
"And her mind?" Victor asked, his voice strained. "She remembers the taste of the tea, Moreno. She remembers feeling sick every afternoon when the nanny brought her snack."
"Children are resilient," Moreno replied gently, adjusting his glasses. "With time, structure, and a safe environment, the trauma will recede. But you need to decide what comes next for this house, Victor. The media circus starts in six hours when the stock market opens."
Victor turned away from the window, walking slowly over to the edge of his daughter’s bed. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from Chloe’s forehead. She stirred slightly, murmuring something unintelligible in her sleep, her tiny hand reaching out to wrap instinctively around his index finger.
A rare, heartbreakingly genuine smile touched the corners of Victor’s mouth.
"The corporation can be rebuilt," Victor whispered, looking down at his daughter. "The estate can be cleaned. But I am never leaving this room again without holding her hand."

Marco appeared silently in the doorway, nodding once to indicate that the federal agents had cleared the property and the perimeter was locked down tight.
"Rest up, boss," Marco said softly. "Tomorrow, we start over."
