Chapter 1 - The Audit of the DeadMarcus adjusted his glasses, his expression grave as he looked down at the tablet in his hands. The Chicago skyline outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of Ethan’s penthouse seemed muted beneath a heavy layer of gray fog, mirroring the tension in the room.

"Six hundred and forty-two thousand dollars, Boss," Marcus said quietly. "That’s what Daniel Bennett embezzled from the logistics division before his fatal accident. The auditors flagged it months ago, but the collection notices were automated. They didn't target Valerie specifically until the legal department transferred the debt to her estate following probate."

Ethan did not move. His gaze remained fixed on a single point on his polished mahogany desk, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked in his cheek.

Six hundred and forty-two thousand dollars.

To Ethan Cain, that amount was nothing—a rounding error in a massive international portfolio. But to Valerie, a widow struggling to pay basic bills and forced to sell her grandmother's heirloom, it was an insurmountable executioner's axe.

"She has no idea?" Ethan asked, his voice dangerously low.

"None," Marcus replied. "Daniel kept his books clean at home. She thought he was just a mid-level accountant with a modest salary. She had no clue he was funneling company funds into offshore accounts. When he died, the debt defaulted directly to her as his sole heir. She's been selling off everything she owns just to keep the collection agencies at bay."

Ethan stood up, walking slowly toward the glass. The realization hit him with physical force. For the past six months, his own corporation—an empire built on ruthlessness and absolute control—had been systematically destroying the only woman he had ever loved.

"Close the file, Marcus," Ethan said without turning around.

Marcus blinked, surprised. "Close it? Boss, that's a massive breach. If the board finds out we're writing off half a million dollars for a personal connection, they'll—"

"I said, close the file," Ethan interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like a razor. "Mark the debt as fully recovered through asset liquidation. Void the balance."

"Void it? Just like that?" Marcus stared at him, bewildered. "Ethan, the board has been breathing down our necks about financial leaks. If they audit that ledger and see a six-figure variance vanish without a legal trace, they'll demand answers. And if they find out it's for Daniel Bennett's widow..."

"Let them look," Ethan turned, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that made his chief financial officer step back. "Let them ask. Anyone who questions my methods can bring their concerns directly to me. Understood?"

Marcus swallowed hard and nodded. "Understood, Boss. But... what about Valerie? She still thinks she owes the money. She received a final notice yesterday."

Ethan grabbed his tailored coat from the back of his chair. "I'll handle it myself."
