Chapter 8 - The Ultimate GambleEthan’s breath hitched. For the first time since Valerie had walked into the appraisal room, the mask of absolute control shattered.

"My sister?" Ethan repeated, his voice dropping to a terrifying, lethal growl. "Chloe?"
"Vance knows everything," Marcus reported rapidly over the encrypted line. "He figured out that Chloe is your only living blood relative, the one weakness you couldn't hide behind corporate walls. He’s trading her life and the ledger... for complete control of the southern docks and your resignation as head of the syndicate."
Valerie stood up from the sofa, wrapping the blanket around her shoulders as she watched the color drain from Ethan’s face.
"Ethan," she whispered, stepping forward. "What's happening? Who did they take?"
Ethan looked at her, his mind racing through a dozen tactical scenarios, every single one of them carrying a catastrophic cost. If he gave in to Vance, he would lose his empire, his power, and the leverage protecting everyone he cared about. If he fought back without securing Chloe first, his sister would die tonight.
And worse—Vance still had the ledger containing Valerie’s name as Daniel's primary beneficiary. Vance knew that Valerie was the key to Ethan’s heart, which meant she was now Vance's ultimate target.
"Marcus," Ethan commanded, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Tell the strike teams to stand down from the terminal. Do not engage. I am going there alone."
"Alone, Boss? Are you insane?" Marcus protested over the speaker. "Vance is waiting with fifty armed men! It’s a slaughterhouse!"
"If I roll in with an army, Chloe dies before we cross the gates," Ethan said, his jaw set in stone. "Prepare the backup extraction unit three blocks away. If I don't walk out of that terminal in forty-five minutes... you burn Vance’s operation to ash."
He ended the call, slipping the phone back into his pocket.
He turned to look at Valerie. She was standing in the center of the kitchen, her dark eyes filled with terror, not for herself, but for him.
"You're going to walk into a trap," she said, her voice shaking. "Ethan, don't do this. If they have your sister... let the police—"
"The police don't exist in my world, Valerie," Ethan interrupted gently, stepping over to her. He reached out, his hands resting on her shoulders, holding her close as if memorizing the feel of her. "Vance wants me. He wants my throne. And he's using my family to get it."
"Then let me come with you," Valerie pleaded, gripping the lapels of his shirt. "If they know about Daniel's locker, if they know who I am, I'm already tied up in this. Let me help you."
"No," Ethan said firmly, pressing a lingering, desperate kiss to her forehead. "You stay here. Lock the doors. Marcus has left a detail outside that nothing on earth can penetrate. If I don't come back..."
He paused, swallowing the knot in his throat.

"...live your life, Valerie. Forget the Cains. Forget the bakery. Just live."
Before she could protest, Ethan turned and walked out the door, closing it softly behind him.
