Chapter 4 - The Vulture’s CircleThe penthouse boardroom of Cain Logistics was bathed in the harsh, sterile glow of midnight fluorescence. Seven board members—elderly men with polished shoes and ice in their veins—sat around the massive black marble table. At the head of the table sat Ethan Cain, his expression as impassive as a granite monument, though the air around him crackled with suppressed fury.

Marcus stood near the projection screen, clicking a remote to bring up a series of digital photographs.

"This is the contents of storage locker 409 in Cicero, registered under Daniel Bennett’s alias," Marcus announced, his voice echoing in the silent room. "Victor Vance’s operatives broke in twelve hours ago. Our intelligence units intercepted their chatter before they could copy the hard drives, but they managed to secure the physical backup books."

On the screen flashed images of thick leather-bound ledgers filled with handwritten columns of numbers, offshore routing codes, and signatures.

Old Arthur Sterling, the senior-most board member, adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and leaned forward.

"Let me get this straight," Sterling rasped, his voice dripping with condescension. "For eighteen months, a low-level accountant working in our logistics division systematically looted half a million dollars from our accounts, hid the records in a suburban storage locker, and died before we could recover it. And instead of executing standard asset seizure against his estate, you, Mr. Cain, personally intervened yesterday to wipe the slate clean?"

Ethan did not flinch. He leaned back in his leather chair, resting his fingers together in front of him.

"My decisions regarding company ledger adjustments are not subject to your retroactive approval, Sterling," Ethan said softly.

"They are when those decisions compromise the security of this entire syndicate!" Sterling slammed his hand onto the table, standing up to tower over the younger men. "Vance has those books! He knows about our federal contacts, our shipping routes, and our tax shelters! And worse—Daniel Bennett had his wife, Valerie Bennett, listed as the legal secondary access holder to that locker. Vance’s men are already hunting her down to find out what else she knows!"

A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the room. The board members exchanged nervous glances. For years, Ethan Cain had ruled without a single chink in his armor. He was untouchable, merciless, and completely immune to personal weakness.

Until now.

"You let your personal nostalgia for a bakery girl jeopardize an empire worth billions," Sterling sneered, his eyes narrowing. "If Vance gets to her and extracts those details, our entire operation goes up in flames. The commission will demand a blood sacrifice, Ethan. And if you won't clean up your mess, the board will vote to strip your authority."

Ethan slowly stood up.

He didn't raise his voice. He didn't pound his fist on the table. But the moment he rose to his full height, the temperature in the room seemed to drop by ten degrees.

He walked slowly around the table until he was standing directly beside Arthur Sterling, looking down at the older man with eyes as dark and bottomless as the abyss.

"You think," Ethan whispered, his voice like the scrape of a knife over ice, "that because I chose to show mercy to an innocent woman, my grip on this empire has slipped?"

Sterling swallowed hard, trying to maintain his composure. "It’s... it’s simply a question of risk management—"

In a motion too fast for the eye to follow, Ethan’s hand shot out, grabbing Sterling by the lapels of his expensive Italian suit and lifting him an inch off the floor with effortless strength. The other board members flinched backward in terror, none of them daring to reach for a phone or a weapon.

"Listen to me very carefully, Arthur," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Cain Logistics is mine. Every dollar, every ship, every man on these docks answers to me. If Victor Vance thinks he can use Valerie Bennett as leverage against me, he has signed his own death warrant."

Ethan shoved Sterling back down into his chair with enough force to rattle the old man's teeth.

"Marcus," Ethan commanded, turning sharply toward his CFO.

"Boss?"

"Mobilize the enforcement teams. Secure every perimeter within three blocks of Valerie’s apartment. I want a twenty-four-hour surveillance detail on her front door, invisible to her eyes. If anyone—any operative from Vance, any bounty hunter, any rat—gets within fifty yards of her building..."

Ethan paused, a dark, lethal promise flashing in his gaze.

"...send them straight to the bottom of Lake Michigan."
