Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Broken CrownThe silence that followed my father’s command was heavier than the steel bars encasing my broken body.

Marcus stood frozen, the champagne flute trembling in his hand, a thin smirk still frozen on his lips like a mask pasted on a corpse. He looked from my father’s impassoned, ice-cold eyes to the towering men in black suits flanking the basement entrance. For a fleeting, delusional second, Marcus still believed his carefully constructed web of lies would protect him.

"Sir... Mr. Vance," Marcus stammered, his voice losing its arrogant cadence as he tried to back away toward the shadows of the false wall. "There’s a misunderstanding. She... she lost her mind. She ran away, and she must have crawled down here to frame me—"

Before Marcus could finish his pathetic plea, the largest of the men in black suits—a hulking mountain of a man named Viktor—closed the distance between them in a blur. Viktor didn't strike him with a fist; he simply reached out, gripped Marcus by the throat with one massive hand, and slammed him against the concrete wall with enough force to shatter the glass flute into a thousand glittering shards.

"Silence," Viktor growled, his voice like grinding stones.

My father, Richard Vance, didn't even flinch. He walked past the thrashing, choking Marcus as though he were nothing more than a discarded piece of trash. Dropping to his knees on the damp, freezing concrete, my father ignored the blood staining his immaculate Italian leather shoes. His calloused, trembling hands reached through the narrow gaps of the steel cage bars, gently cupping my tear-streaked, bruised face.

"My girl," my father whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, terrifying fury that I had never heard in all my years of growing up under his protective, quiet wing. "My sweet Elena. Look at me. Dad is here. No one will ever touch you again."

"The... the baby," I gasped, another wave of searing, agonizing pain ripping through my lower abdomen. The pool of blood beneath me was widening, dark and warm against the freezing floor. "Dad... it's coming. The shock... the cage..."

My father’s eyes darted downward. The moment he saw the blood, the last remaining trace of the gentle, retired widower vanished entirely. The man kneeling before me was once again the phantom kingpin—the absolute ruler of an underground empire that governments and cartels feared to name.

"Call the medical unit," my father commanded without looking back.

One of the men in suits instantly raised a satphone to his ear. But it wasn't an ordinary ambulance they were calling. My father knew that an ordinary hospital in this suburban neighborhood would ask too many questions—questions Marcus and his mistress had spent weeks paving over with false narratives. No, my father had deployed his own private, military-grade trauma team, flying in on a stealth chopper that was already hovering silently above the estate.

"Dad," I whimpered, my vision beginning to blur at the edges as the cold seeped deeper into my bones. "She’s... she’s upstairs. In my room. Wearing my clothes."

My father’s jaw clenched so tightly I thought the bone would snap. He slowly stood up, turning his terrifying gaze back toward Marcus, who was now gasping for air in Viktor’s unyielding grip.

"Bring him," my father whispered softly, a whisper that carried more menace than a roaring fire. "And bring the woman down. I want them to watch every single second of what happens next."
