Chapter 3 - The Shadow Empire AwakensThe blinding blue glare of the plasma cutter illuminated the damp basement walls as molten metal dripped onto the concrete. Sparks showered around my father, who shielded my body with his own cloak, refusing to let a single hot ember touch my skin.

"Hold on, Elena. Just a few more seconds," he whispered against my hair, his hands slick with my blood. "Your heart rate is dropping. Stay with me, baby girl."

Across the room, Chloe collapsed onto the floor, sobbing hysterically as she realized the sheer magnitude of her nightmare. She looked at the two detectives standing near the stairs, desperately seeking an ally.

"Officer! You have to do something!" Chloe screamed, crawling toward Detective Miller, the senior of the two local cops. "These men are kidnappers! They’re breaking into our house!"

Detective Miller slowly wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead. He looked down at Chloe with a mixture of disgust and profound terror. He didn't move a muscle. He didn't even blink.

Earlier that evening, when my father’s black sedans had intercepted Detective Miller and his partner outside a local diner, they hadn't presented a standard warrant. They had presented a ledger—a thick, black leather book containing every single corrupt payoff, every falsified police report, and every dirty secret Detective Miller had buried over his twenty-year career. Alongside it was a satellite phone connecting Miller directly to the Director of National Intelligence, who simply said: “Do whatever Richard Vance tells you to do, or your badge won't be the only thing you lose tonight.”

"Miss," Detective Miller said stiffly, staring straight ahead. "I don't see any kidnapping here. I only see a rescue operation."

"You're corrupt! You're all corrupt!" Chloe shrieked, pounding her fists on the floor.

"Shut your mouth," Marcus wheezed from where he lay curled on the floor, clutching his bruised throat. He finally managed to push himself up onto his hands and knees, glaring at me through the widening gap in the steel cage. Even now, trapped and exposed, the venom in his eyes hadn't faded. "You think you win because your daddy has money? You're a parasite, Elena. You and your whole damn family—"

CRACK.

Before Marcus could finish his sentence, Viktor’s heavy leather boot connected squarely with Marcus’s jaw, sending him crashing backward into a wooden shelving unit. Jars of preserved fruit smashed over his head, raining glass and sticky syrup across his face.

"One more word," Viktor said quietly, "and your tongue will be mailed to your mother."

With a final, ear-splitting screech of tearing metal, Viktor kicked the welded steel door inward. It crashed onto the concrete floor with a heavy thud.

The private trauma team rushed into the basement immediately. Paramedics in tactical medical gear swarmed the cage, sliding a specialized pneumatic board beneath my body to lift me out of the freezing dust without aggravating my internal trauma.

"She’s in active labor, and there’s severe internal hemorrhaging," the lead medic shouted over the roar of the helicopter blades thundering outside. "We need to lift off now or we lose both mother and child."

My father stood up, towering over the medical stretcher as they wheeled me out of the basement toward the open double doors leading to the backyard. The night air hit my face—crisp, electric, and smelling of ozone and jet fuel.

Just before they loaded me into the back of the medical chopper, my father leaned over me, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying promise.

"Go to the hospital, Elena," my father whispered, kissing my forehead. "Let them save you and my grandchild. Leave the rest to me. Marcus and his little whore are going to learn what happens when you wake a sleeping monster."

The doors slammed shut, and the helicopter surged into the night sky, leaving Marcus and Chloe behind in the ruins of their stolen life.
