Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the NurseryBy evening, the mansion was quiet again.

The flashing lights of police cars had faded down the winding streets of Las Lomas de Chapultepec. Senator Robles was behind bars, and Paulina had been escorted off the property with nothing more than the handbag on her shoulder, her social standing reduced to ashes in a single afternoon.
In the nursery on the third floor—a room Diego had secretly had built months ago, hoping against hope that he might someday find Marisol—the soft glow of a nightlight illuminated the walls.
Valentina was fast asleep in a brand-new crib, still clutching the worn-out stuffed rabbit in one hand and the golden button in the other.
Marisol sat on the edge of the velvet armchair, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Her old apron was gone, replaced by a clean, simple silk blouse Diego had asked his personal shopper to rush over. Yet, she still felt like an intruder in a fairy tale that belonged to someone else.
The door creaked open, and Diego walked in, holding two steaming mugs of chamomile tea. He handed one to Marisol and sat quietly on a low stool nearby.
"She has your eyes," Diego said softly, staring at the sleeping child. "And your stubbornness. I saw it when she picked up that button this morning. She didn't flinch. She didn't cry. She just held onto what she found."
Marisol took a slow sip of the tea, the warmth calming the storm inside her chest.
"I was so afraid of you, Diego," she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. "Not because of your money, but because I knew that if I looked into your eyes again, I would fall right back into the girl I used to be—the one who thought love could survive in a world built on concrete and contracts."
Diego reached out and gently covered her trembling hand with his large, warm palm.

"We aren't those people anymore, Marisol," he said, his voice deep and steady. "I spent four years building an empire, and today I realized it was completely empty. I had everything, and I had nothing." He paused, looking directly into her eyes with a raw intensity that made her breath catch. "Marisol... will you let me spend the rest of my life proving to you that you and Valentina are the only foundation that matters?"
Before Marisol could find her voice, Valentina stirred in her sleep, letting out a soft sigh, and rolled over, her tiny fingers loosening around the golden button.
