Chapter 7 - THE RETURN OF THE MATRIARCHThe foyer fell into a stunned, breathless silence.

Eleanor Sterling walked with measured, terrifying grace. Though her hair was stark white, her eyes were as sharp and piercing as broken glass. She stopped right in front of Supervisor Vance, looking down her nose at the trembling bureaucrat.
“You’ve grown very bold, Brenda,” Eleanor said softly, her voice carrying decades of absolute authority. “Taking bribes from my treacherous brother Arthur to kidnap children and terrorize innocent mothers in my own grandson’s house.”
“Mrs. Sterling... I—I was just following standard protocol—” Brenda stammered, backing away until her spine hit the front door.
“Protocol?” Eleanor’s cane tapped sharply against the marble floor. “The only protocol being executed today is the permanent eradication of corruption from this family and this city. Marshals, escort this woman off the property and detain her for questioning.”
Before Brenda could utter another word, the two federal marshals grabbed her arms and hauled her out of the mansion, leaving the state troopers scrambling out behind them like frightened schoolboys.
Silence settled over the grand foyer once more.
Michael stared at his grandmother, astonishment written across his face. “Grandmother... we thought you were in Europe. We thought—”
“You thought I was dead, like the rest of the vultures,” Eleanor interrupted with a faint, dry smile. She turned her piercing gaze upward, locking eyes with Riley standing on the stairs.
Eleanor’s expression softened into something profound and melancholic.
“Come down here, child,” Eleanor said gently.
Riley slowly descended the remaining stairs, clutching Aria tightly. When she reached the floor, Eleanor reached out a frail, ring-adorned hand and touched the baby’s tiny cheek.
“What is her name?” Eleanor asked softly.
“Aria,” Riley whispered.
Eleanor nodded slowly, then looked up at Riley. “Do you know why Arthur and his goons tried so desperately to rip you away from here last night, Riley?”
Riley shook her head. “No. I just thought... I thought I was nobody. Just a homeless girl.”
May you like
“You are not nobody,” Eleanor said firmly. “Your mother was Sarah Evans—the brilliant chief legal researcher who discovered that Arthur Sterling embezzled forty million dollars from the family trust thirty years ago to build his private empire. When your mother tried to expose him, Arthur ruined her life, drove her into poverty, and forced her into exile.”
Michael’s jaw dropped. He looked at Riley with sudden, staggering realization. “Sarah Evans... Riley, you’re not a random stranger we found on the street. You’re family.”
