Chapter 8 - The Aftermath and the ApologyBy evening, the financial news networks were in a state of absolute frenzy.

BREAKING: Whitaker Capital Announces Immediate Restructuring; Senior Vice-Chairman Richard Whitaker Resigns Amid Federal Probe.

The headlines scrolled endlessly across television screens in every upscale lounge, diner, and penthouse across New York City. At a high-end restaurant in Tribeca, Brooke Whitaker sat staring at her television screen in horror, her phone buzzing incessantly with panicked texts from friends asking if she knew about Claire, if she knew about the Ellison takeover, if she knew that the "waitress" she had mocked at brunch was now essentially the co-owner of the entire Whitaker dynasty.

Her phone rang again. It was Nathan.

With trembling fingers, Brooke answered. "Nathan... please—"

"Pack your bags, Brooke," Nathan’s voice cut through the phone line like ice. "You and your husband have forty-eight hours to vacate the family estate in the Hamptons. Your trust fund has been audited and frozen pending review of your involvement in Richard’s shell companies."

"Nathan, you can't do that!" Brooke shrieked, tears of pure panic spilling down her cheeks. "I'm family! We share blood!"

"Claire is my wife," Nathan replied coldly. "And you made your choices the moment you decided to humiliate her."

The line went dead.

Meanwhile, high above the city in the penthouse overlooking Central Park, Claire stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the glittering lights of Manhattan.

The weight that had pressed down on her chest for three long years—the ghost of her father’s heartbreak, the whispers, the humiliation at Verelle—was finally gone.

Nathan walked up behind her, setting two glasses of champagne on the table before wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest.

"Well," Nathan murmured, resting his chin on her shoulder. "That was quite a Tuesday."

Claire chuckled softly, leaning back into his embrace. She reached up, touching his face.

"You know, for a man who reads paperbacks in diner corners, you make a pretty terrifying warlord."

"Only for the right woman," Nathan smiled, kissing her temple. "So... what now, Mrs. Whitaker? The Madison Avenue boutiques are yours. Whitaker Capital is ours. What do you want to do next?"

Claire turned in his arms, looking up into the eyes of the man who had loved her when she had nothing, and fought for her when she had everything.

"I think," Claire smiled, her eyes sparkling with mischief, "we go back to that diner near Bryant Park. I want my old morning shift back just long enough to see the look on the manager's face when my personal chauffeur drops me off."

Nathan laughed—a rich, genuine sound that echoed through the penthouse.

"Consider it done."
