Chapter 13 - The Foundation of Tomorrow

Six months later, the Isabella Moretti Pediatric Foundation held its very first public gala at a grand venue in downtown Manhattan.

As the executive director of the foundation, I stood at the podium facing a crowd of top-tier medical researchers, pediatricians, and federal officials. The spotlights shone brightly overhead, reflecting off the newly polished bronze plaque dedicated to Isabella’s memory.

“Four years ago, two little boys were slowly being poisoned inside their own home under the guise of an untreatable disease,” I spoke into the microphone, my voice steady, clear, and resonant. “For a long time, their family lived in a gilded cage of medical gaslighting and corporate greed. We believed that wealth could buy answers, when all it really bought was silence.”

I paused, looking out over the crowd. In the front row, Lucas and Leo sat proudly between their father and Mrs. Harper, holding small model airplanes they had built together.

“But medical science doesn't just need expensive technology,” I continued, a confident smile spreading across my face. “It needs caregivers who notice the little things. The hours children sleep, the rooms where their symptoms worsen, and the quiet truths that doctors overlook. Today, the Isabella Moretti Foundation opens its doors to fund independent, transparent pediatric care across the Northeast, ensuring that no corporation or corrupt physician can ever hide behind a medical chart again.”

The applause that followed was deafening. Flashbulbs popped, and as I stepped down from the podium, Lucas and Leo ran straight into my arms, nearly knocking me over.

“You were amazing, Claire!” Leo beamed, looking up at me with his bright, healthy eyes. “When I grow up, I want to be a detective just like you!”

I laughed, kneeling down to hug them both tightly. “You can be anything you want to be, champions. Absolutely anything.”
