Chapter 3 - Trapped in the Web

"Security!" Dr. Blake yelled, his voice echoing down the sprawling hallway. "Intruder in the children's wing! She's tampering with the medical apparatus!"

"You lying bastard!" I shouted, lunging forward, but the heavy brass vent cover was too clumsy to swing effectively.

Before I could reach him, heavy footsteps thundered up the staircase. Within three seconds, two massive private security guards in black tactical gear burst into the bedroom, their eyes darting between Dr. Blake and me.

"Hold her!" Dr. Blake commanded, pointing a trembling finger at me. "She's unstable! She was tampering with the boys' environmental life-support system! She tried to sabotage their treatment!"

"Don't listen to him, Vincent!" I yelled as the two guards grabbed my arms, pinning them behind my back with brutal efficiency.

Down the hallway, Vincent Moretti appeared, his face pale, breathing heavily as he pushed past the twins. "What is going on? Why did the security alarm trip?"

"Vincent, thank God," Dr. Blake said, seamlessly slipping back into the role of the devoted, frantic physician. "I came upstairs to check on the boys' baseline vitals, and I caught Miss Morgan actively dismantling the ventilation shaft. She was pouring an unknown substance into the ductwork! She could have killed them!"

Vincent stared at Dr. Blake, then shifted his gaze to me. His eyes were dark, unreadable, storming with a terrifying mix of fear and confusion.

"Is this true, Claire?" Vincent asked, his voice deathly quiet.

"Look at the wall, Vincent!" I pleaded, straining against the guards' grip. "Look inside the duct! It's not a life-support system, it's an aerosol atomizer! He's been drugging your sons for eleven months!"

Vincent took slow, heavy steps toward the open wall cavity. He peered inside, his hand brushing against the warm plastic reservoir and the custom PVC tubing. He didn't touch it directly, but his fingers hovered over the wires connected to the electrical outlet.

"Harrison," Vincent whispered, his voice shaking. "What is this?"

Dr. Blake swallowed hard, but his composure held. "It's an experimental vaporized nutrient delivery system, Vincent. I requisitioned it off-label to bypass their digestive absorption issues. You signed the supplemental medical waiver three months ago."

"I signed no such thing!" Vincent roared, turning around so fast his expensive watch caught the light. "I never authorized experimental vapor delivery systems in my children's rooms!"

"You did," Dr. Blake insisted smoothly, pulling a sleek digital tablet from his pocket. "Page four hundred and twelve of the institutional care rider. You initialed it during the consultation in Boston."

I watched Vincent's face. The billionaire was powerful, brilliant, and used to controlling every variable in his empire. But right now, standing in his own home, surrounded by expensive lies and medical jargon, he looked trapped in a spider's web he didn't even know was being spun.

"Let her go," Vincent commanded the guards.

They released my arms immediately. I rubbed my wrists, glaring at Dr. Blake, who offered me a smug, untouchable grin.

"Claire," Vincent said, looking at me with exhausted desperation. "You said you noticed something. Tell me everything. Right now."

Before I could open my mouth, Mrs. Harper appeared at the end of the hallway, her face completely drained of color as she held a ringing landline phone out toward Vincent.

"Mr. Moretti," she choked out, her hands trembling so badly she nearly dropped the handset. "It’s... it’s the lab in New York. They tested the blood samples you sent yesterday morning."

Vincent took the phone, his hand gripping the plastic so hard his knuckles turned white. "Moretti here. Go ahead."

We all stood in absolute, suffocating silence. The only sound was the faint hum of the hidden aerosol pump still cycling rhythmically inside the wall.

Vincent listened for ten seconds.

Then, the color drained entirely from his face, and the phone slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the marble floor.
