Chapter 14 - The Unsent Letter

A year passed in a blur of peaceful routine, community advocacy, and quiet family dinners. The nightmares of armed tactical teams and hidden neurotoxins faded into distant memories.

Then came a rainy Tuesday afternoon in early spring.

I was sitting in my newly established office at the foundation headquarters, reviewing compliance audits for regional children's clinics, when my receptionist buzzed my desk.

“Miss Morgan? There’s a courier at the front desk for you. He insists on delivering this directly into your hands.”

I frowned, glancing at the clock. “Send him back.”

A moment later, a young courier in a yellow raincoat walked into my office, placing a heavy, wax-sealed manila envelope on my desk. Without a word, he turned and left, leaving behind the distinct scent of damp wool and ozone.

I picked up the envelope. There was no return address. Just my name, written in elegant, unfamiliar cursive.

To Claire Morgan.

With a cautious breath, I broke the wax seal, pulled out a thick sheet of expensive cotton paper, and began to read the first lines:

Dear Claire,

If you are reading this, it means my sister Eleanor failed to reclaim the Moretti estate, and you have successfully dismantled the Sterling medical network. It also means you have proven yourself to be every bit the formidable strategist Vincent always needed.

I stopped breathing. The handwriting wasn’t Eleanor’s—no, it was older, sharper, written with a steady, calculated hand.

My name is Richard Sterling, the letter continued. The eldest sibling, currently living abroad outside the jurisdiction of your federal courts. You thought you cut off the head of the snake when you imprisoned Eleanor and Blake. But our family’s global assets run much deeper than a single regional trust.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I kept reading, my eyes scanning the terrifying paragraphs below.

Before Eleanor’s arrest, she deposited a secondary contingency file into an off-site quantum server in Zurich—a file programmed to automatically release a fabricated scandal targeting the Moretti Foundation if my family’s global accounts remain frozen. Unless... we make an arrangement.
