Chapter 6 - THE NEW QUEEN OF VANCE INDUSTRIESThree weeks later, the morning sun broke brightly over the sprawling glass-and-steel headquarters of Vance Industries downtown. The autumn chill had sharpened the air, but inside the executive boardroom on the fortieth floor, the atmosphere was electric with anticipation and renewed purpose.

Seated around the massive conference table were the senior members of the board of directors—veteran executives who had watched the company weather decades of economic storms, only to nearly be brought to its knees by internal corruption and embezzlement.

When the heavy oak doors opened and I walked in, wearing a sharp, tailored navy blue pantsuit instead of mourning black, every single person at the table stood up in unison.

Samuel Price, sitting at the far end near the projection screen, offered a respectful, proud nod.

“Good morning, everyone,” I said, my voice steady, clear, and projecting effortlessly across the silent room. I took my seat at the head of the table—the very chair my father had occupied for thirty years. “Let’s get to work.”

The first item on the agenda was the financial restructuring and asset recovery audit. Thanks to the ironclad evidence provided by the bank investigators and the court orders, over eighty percent of the siphoned funds had already been successfully frozen in offshore accounts and recovered back into the corporate treasury.

“The company’s liquidity is fully restored, Ms. Vance,” the chief financial officer reported, adjusting his glasses with a wide, relieved smile. “In fact, with the cancellation of the fraudulent expansion projects and the restructuring of our debt, Vance Industries is in a stronger cash position today than it was two years ago.”

“Good,” I replied, opening my digital tablet. “I want every penny recovered from the fraudulent accounts redirected into our employee pension fund and our research and development division. We build our future on innovation, not embezzlement.”

Murmurs of enthusiastic approval rippled around the table. For the first time in years, the leadership team looked like a unified front, energized by a shared vision rather than paralyzed by fear of scandal.

As the meeting proceeded smoothly, my phone buzzed quietly against the polished wood of the table. I glanced down briefly at the screen.

It was an encrypted notification from the county correctional facility.

Julian’s arraignment hearing had concluded thirty minutes ago. Denied bail due to the severity of the flight risk and the overwhelming video evidence of attempted murder and corporate grand larceny, he had been remanded directly to maximum security pending trial. Serena, facing accessory charges and asset forfeiture, had filed for divorce and fled the state, leaving her disgraced husband entirely alone behind bars.

I locked my phone screen, turned it face down on the table, and looked back up at my board members.

The past was buried deep, locked away alongside the ghosts of greed and betrayal. The future belonged to those who stayed in the trenches when the storm hit.
