CHAPTER 2 — THE FAMILY THAT THOUGHT MONEY WAS ABOVE THE LAW

Margaret Prescott walked into the room as though she owned the hospital.

Perhaps she thought she did.

People moved aside.

Doctors recognized her.

Nurses lowered their voices.

Money had trained the world to step out of her way.

She expected this Army officer to do exactly the same.

Instead...

Victoria never moved.

Not an inch.

Margaret's smile tightened.

"Colonel Hart..."

She extended one perfectly manicured hand.

Victoria ignored it.

The silence became uncomfortable.

Ethan sighed dramatically.

"Emily has always struggled emotionally."

Victoria looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

One word.

Completely calm.

Entirely controlled.

"You don't get to diagnose injuries before doctors do."

Brandon laughed.

"Oh come on."

He looked around the room.

"This doesn't need to become some dramatic scandal."

Emily suddenly squeezed Victoria's sleeve.

"So they can hurt another woman?"

Everyone became quiet.

Ethan's face hardened.

"You promised you wouldn't tell anyone."

Victoria slowly turned toward him.

"You just admitted there was something to tell."

For the first time...

Ethan stopped speaking.

Margaret immediately stepped forward.

"My son misspoke."

Victoria simply memorized every word.

Every reaction.

Every interruption.

Years commanding investigations had taught her something priceless.

Liars always volunteered too much.

Margaret lowered her voice.

"Our attorneys can make this disappear."

Victoria remained silent.

"Our family contributes millions to political campaigns."

Still silent.

"The governor attends our charity galas."

Nothing.

Finally Margaret smiled again.

"We both understand how influence works."

Victoria answered quietly.

"No."

"I understand evidence."

The room fell completely silent.

Margaret's smile disappeared.

"You military people always think rules apply equally."

Victoria looked at Emily's bruises.

"They do."

"Eventually."

Before anyone could answer...

The emergency room doors burst open.

Two detectives entered carrying evidence kits.

Nobody had called them.

Margaret frowned.

"Who contacted police?"

Victoria slowly reached into her pocket.

She held up a small digital recorder.

The red recording light was still blinking.

"I did."

Every threat...

Every insult...

Every admission...

Had just been recorded.

Brandon's face turned pale.

Ethan whispered one word.

"...Damn."

May you like

But Victoria wasn't finished.

Not even close.
