CHAPTER 7 — THE LAST WITNESS

The first live news helicopter circled above Mercy General Hospital at 5:42 a.m.
By sunrise, satellite trucks lined both sides of the street.
Television reporters spoke into microphones while cameras captured every person entering or leaving the emergency department.
The Prescott family had spent decades controlling the narrative.
Today, for the first time...
They couldn't control a single headline.
Inside the hospital, FBI agents had established a temporary command center in an unused conference room.
Boxes of evidence covered one wall.
Security footage.
Financial records.
Emily's medical reports.
Olivia Bennett's journals.
Every hour, the pile grew larger.
Colonel Victoria Hart stood beside the window, watching reporters gather outside.
She had spent nearly three decades making decisions under pressure.
Combat zones.
Disaster relief missions.
Hostage evacuations.
But this battle was different.
This one involved her daughter.
Agent Rebecca Monroe entered quietly.
"Colonel..."
Victoria turned.
"We've confirmed most of Olivia's documents."
"And?"
Monroe hesitated.
"They're authentic."
Emily looked up from her hospital bed.
"So... people finally believe us?"
The agent offered a small nod.
"They do."
"But proving abuse is only part of this investigation."
"The harder question is who helped hide it."
Silence settled over the room.
Everyone understood what she meant.
Families with enormous wealth rarely protected themselves alone.
Someone outside the Prescott estate had looked away.
Maybe more than one person.
Across the hall, Ethan Prescott sat alone in an interview room.
He had asked for a lawyer hours earlier.
No one had questioned him since.
The silence was beginning to break him.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
His hands trembled.
The confident executive who had walked into the hospital the night before was gone.
A knock came at the door.
Agent Monroe entered with a single folder.
She placed it on the table.
Without saying a word.
Ethan stared at it.
"What is this?"
Monroe answered calmly.
"Your opportunity."
He frowned.
She opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Emily's bruises.
Security footage from the guest house.
Financial transfers.
Messages between family members.
Then...
One final page.
A signed statement from Olivia Bennett.
Ethan stopped breathing for a moment.
Monroe folded her hands.
"Mr. Prescott..."
"We're interested in the truth."
"If your role was smaller than everyone else's..."
"Now is the time to say so."
For nearly a minute...
Neither of them spoke.
Finally Ethan whispered—
"I never thought they'd go this far."
Monroe remained expressionless.
"They?"
Ethan closed his eyes.
"My mother controlled everything."
"My brother enforced it."
"I convinced myself it was normal."
His voice cracked.
"Until Emily."
At that same moment...
Margaret Prescott requested a private meeting with Colonel Victoria Hart.
Against the advice of the FBI, Victoria agreed.
Two agents remained outside the room.
Margaret entered wearing the same cream-colored suit she had worn all night.
Only now it looked tired.
So did she.
"I came to make an offer."
Victoria didn't respond.
Margaret slid a folder across the table.
Inside were property deeds.
Investment accounts.
Corporate shares.
Nearly one hundred million dollars in assets.
Margaret looked directly into Victoria's eyes.
"Take everything."
Victoria didn't even glance at the documents.
Margaret continued.
"Emily can have it all."
"Houses."
"Businesses."
"The family trust."
"Every penny."
Victoria finally spoke.
"You think this is about money?"
Margaret's composure slipped.
"It has always been about money."
"No," Victoria answered quietly.
"It's about accountability."
Margaret leaned forward.
"You don't understand."
Victoria held her gaze.
"Then help me understand."
For the first time...
Margaret looked frightened.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Afraid.
She whispered only seven words.
"You don't know who's really behind this."
Victoria's expression never changed.
"What does that mean?"
Margaret slowly shook her head.
"I can't tell you here."
Before Victoria could ask another question...
One of the FBI agents burst through the door.
"Colonel!"
Victoria stood immediately.
"What happened?"
The agent's face had gone pale.
"The witness..."
"What witness?"
"Olivia Bennett..."
Victoria's stomach tightened.
The agent continued.
"She disappeared less than three minutes ago."
The hospital security cameras showed Olivia leaving her room alone.
Then entering an elevator.
After that...
Nothing.
No exit footage.
No parking garage footage.
No sign of her anywhere inside the building.
Only one thing remained.
A folded note lying on the empty hospital bed.
Agent Monroe carefully opened it.
The message contained a single handwritten sentence.
"If you want the whole truth... stop looking at the Prescott family."
Every person in the room fell silent.
May you like
Because for the first time...
It appeared the Prescott family might not have been the most powerful people involved after all.
