CHAPTER 1 — The Dog We Trusted Turned Into a Monster

Rex had been part of our family for seven years.

He wasn't just a dog.

He had been there when I proposed to Sara, slept beside our bed after our wedding, and somehow seemed to understand every emotion we never spoke aloud.

When Sara became pregnant, Rex became even more protective. Every morning he rested his head gently against her growing belly, wagging his tail as if he already loved our unborn child.

That was why what happened that afternoon made absolutely no sense.

I had just come home from work when I heard Sara scream.

A scream unlike anything I'd ever heard.

I sprinted upstairs.

The nursery looked as though a tornado had ripped through it.

Tiny baby clothes covered the floor.

The new crib blanket had been shredded.

The closet doors hung open.

Sara stood frozen against the wall, one trembling hand protecting her stomach.

And Rex...

He stood in front of the closet.

His fur bristled.

His breathing was heavy.

He wasn't barking anymore.

He simply stared into the darkness inside the closet.

Then he growled.

Not at Sara.

Not at me.

At the closet.

"What happened?" I shouted.

Sara could barely breathe.

"I was putting away the baby's clothes... then Rex suddenly started barking... he jumped into the closet and started tearing everything apart..."

I saw only one thing.

My pregnant wife.

Terrified.

Without thinking, I grabbed Rex by the collar.

He didn't fight me.

He didn't bite.

He didn't even bark.

Instead...

He kept trying to turn his head back toward the closet.

As if begging me to look.

But fear had already taken over.

I dragged him outside into the pouring rain.

"You could've hurt her!" I yelled.

He simply sat there.

Silent.

Watching me.

I locked the door.

Removed his food bowl.

His water bowl.

He would stay outside until he learned his lesson.

That night...

Rain pounded the roof.

Wind howled through the trees.

Rex scratched gently at the back door.

Not desperately.

Not angrily.

Just once every few minutes.

Almost like he was asking me to trust him.

By morning...

He had stopped scratching.

He simply sat beneath the nursery window.

Hour after hour.

Never taking his eyes off that room.

And for the first time...

A terrible question entered my mind.

May you like

What if Rex hadn't been attacking us...

What if he had been trying to warn us?
