CHAPTER 1 — The Dog Who Refused to Stay Silent

For eight years, my German Shepherd Rick had been the calmest dog anyone could ask for.

He never barked without a reason.

He never destroyed furniture.

He never woke me up in the middle of the night.

If Rick reacted to something, there was always an explanation.

That was why I couldn't ignore what started happening one rainy October evening.

At exactly 2:17 every morning, Rick would leave his bed, walk into the kitchen, stare toward the ceiling above the cabinets... and begin growling.

Not barking.

Not whining.

Growling.

Low.

Slow.

As if he was warning someone.

Or something.

The first night I laughed.

"Probably a mouse."

The second night I bought mouse traps.

Nothing.

The third night I called pest control.

They inspected every wall, every vent, every pipe.

"No rodents."

"No birds."

"No insects."

The house was perfectly clean.

Yet Rick became even stranger.

One afternoon I came home from work and nearly dropped my grocery bags.

There he was...

Standing on top of my kitchen cabinets.

Almost touching the ceiling.

His eyes locked on the air vent above him.

His fur stood straight up.

His lips curled back.

He looked...

Terrified.

Yet he refused to come down.

"Rick!"

He ignored me.

Instead, he barked harder than I had ever heard.

Not at me.

At the vent.

For the next two weeks, the behavior became worse.

He stopped sleeping.

Stopped eating normally.

Spent hours sitting on those cabinets, watching the same spot.

Friends joked that my dog had gone crazy.

The veterinarian examined him from head to tail.

Perfect health.

"Maybe anxiety."

They prescribed calming medication.

It changed nothing.

If anything...

Rick became more desperate.

Then came the night that changed everything.

Around three in the morning, Rick wasn't just barking anymore.

He was screaming.

I had never heard a dog make sounds like that.

It echoed through the entire house.

My heart raced.

I grabbed the flashlight.

Dragged the old folding ladder from the garage.

"Fine," I muttered.

"Let's finally see what's inside that vent."

Rick immediately stepped aside...

Almost like he'd been waiting for this moment.

The vent cover was loose.

I don't remember ever touching it.

I removed the screws.

Slowly pulled the metal grille away.

Shined my flashlight inside.

At first...

Nothing.

Only darkness.

Then...

Two glowing eyes blinked back at me.

My blood froze.

Something inside...

Moved.

And suddenly...

It started crawling toward me.

I nearly fell off the ladder.

What emerged wasn't a mouse...

May you like

It was something far worse.

To be continued in Chapter 2...
