CHAPTER 2 — The Secret Hidden Above My Ceiling

The creature lunged toward the opening.
I stumbled backward so violently that the ladder nearly collapsed beneath me.
Rick exploded into furious barking.
The thing hissed.
Not like a cat.
Not like any animal I'd ever heard.
My flashlight shook so badly the beam danced across the ceiling.
Then I finally saw it.
A massive raccoon.
But it wasn't alone.
Behind it...
Tiny eyes reflected back from the darkness.
Five babies.
The mother had built an enormous nest inside the ventilation system.
The pest experts had missed it because the nest wasn't near the walls.
It stretched across the attic ventilation above the kitchen.
I exhaled in relief.
"So that's it..."
Or so I thought.
As I climbed down, Rick didn't relax.
Not even a little.
He kept staring upward.
Still growling.
Still refusing to leave.
Something wasn't right.
The next morning wildlife control arrived.
After nearly three hours, they safely removed the raccoon family.
The workers smiled.
"Problem solved."
Rick watched them leave.
Then...
He climbed back onto the cabinet.
And barked.
Even louder than before.
That was when one of the workers frowned.
"Wait..."
He knocked gently on the ceiling beside the vent.
Thunk.
Thunk.
Thunk.
Then another spot.
Thunk.
Then one section answered differently.
A hollow echo.
He looked at me.
"Your ceiling shouldn't sound like that."
Within minutes they cut open part of the drywall.
Everyone fell silent.
Behind the insulation...
Was a hidden wooden compartment.
Old.
Dust-covered.
Locked with a rusted metal latch.
I had owned this house for six years.
I had never seen it on any blueprint.
The compartment looked like it had been intentionally concealed decades earlier.
When the worker forced it open...
A foul smell drifted out.
Inside sat an old leather suitcase.
Wrapped carefully in plastic.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Thousands of old photographs.
Bundles of letters.
A revolver wrapped in cloth.
Stacks of yellowed newspaper clippings.
Every clipping showed the same headline.
"Local Family Disappears Without a Trace."
The dates...
Were from 1978.
Then I noticed something else.
One photograph showed the front of my house.
Standing on the porch...
Was a family of four.
Smiling.
Exactly where I now stood every morning.
On the back someone had written only five chilling words.
"Never trust the man downstairs."
Suddenly...
A floorboard creaked behind us.
But nobody...
May you like
Was standing there.
To be continued in Chapter 3...
