Chapter 8 - Queen of the Ashes

Three months later, the sun shone brightly over the manicured lawns of the Vance Estate—the historic ancestral home my father had built, which had now returned to its rightful owner.
I stood on the wide veranda, the gentle morning breeze catching the hem of my silk dress. In front of me, three pristine white strollers sat side by side.
Leo was cooing softly, reaching tiny, perfect fingers toward the sky. Liam was fast asleep, breathing deeply with his tiny fists curled under his chin. And Lily was wide awake, her bright, intelligent eyes blinking up at me with an unmistakable spark of fierce determination.
My phone buzzed in my pocket.
I pulled it out. It was a brief legal notification from the federal bankruptcy court.
Holloway Global liquidation finalized. Assets successfully transferred to Vance Holdings. Case closed.
I locked the screen, slipped the phone back into my pocket, and leaned down to adjust the soft blue and pink blankets over my children.
Grant believed a signature on a divorce paper could end me. He believed that abandoning a woman in her darkest hour would clear his path to absolute power.
He had forgotten the oldest rule of survival:
You can bury a seed in the darkest soil, thinking it will rot in the dirt...
