CHAPTER 2 — The Maid Who Saw Everything

The security footage wasn't from the highway.

It was much worse.

It came from inside my own house.

I didn't open the folder immediately.

Instead, I smiled weakly as another guest approached my wheelchair.

It was Daniel.

My best friend since college.

Or so I had believed.

He crouched beside me, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder.

"I'm really sorry, brother."

His voice sounded perfect.

Practiced.

"I'll help you through this."

I looked into his eyes.

"You always have."

For half a second...

Guilt flickered across his face.

Then it disappeared.

Interesting.

Dinner began.

Long tables overflowed with lobster, steak, imported wine, and desserts no one bothered eating.

My wheelchair was deliberately placed at the far end.

Away from the executives.

Away from the microphones.

Away from decisions.

Exactly where Vanessa wanted me.

She spent the evening laughing beside Daniel.

Touching his arm.

Whispering jokes.

Every few minutes they'd glance toward me.

Neither noticed Marcus quietly photographing everything.

Then came the speeches.

Vanessa stood first.

She lifted her champagne glass.

"My fiancé has suffered a terrible tragedy."

She paused dramatically.

"But life moves forward."

Applause.

"I've decided to shoulder even greater responsibility for Whitmore Industries during Nathan's recovery."

More applause.

Several board members nodded.

Exactly as she'd hoped.

Then my uncle Martin stood.

"I believe Vanessa is right."

He cleared his throat.

"The company requires...strong leadership."

Another director agreed.

"So does the family."

Votes were already happening.

Without me.

In my own home.

I lowered my head like a defeated man.

Inside...

I was memorizing every voice.

Late that night the guests finally left.

The mansion became quiet.

Except it wasn't.

At exactly 1:18 AM...

My bedroom door slowly opened.

I kept my breathing slow.

Pretending to sleep.

Someone entered.

Not one person.

Two.

Vanessa.

And Daniel.

Moonlight spilled across the floor.

I heard Vanessa laugh softly.

"He's completely asleep."

Daniel glanced toward the wheelchair.

"You sure he can't feel anything?"

She shrugged.

"What difference does it make?"

Then...

She kissed him.

Inside my bedroom.

Less than six feet from where they believed I lay helpless.

"I can't wait forever," Daniel whispered.

"The board meeting is next Friday."

Vanessa smiled.

"You won't have to."

She reached into her purse.

Pulled out a small silver key.

"The second safe."

Daniel's eyes widened.

"You found it?"

She nodded proudly.

"Nathan still thinks I don't know about the emergency voting shares."

My heartbeat remained perfectly steady.

Though inside...

Everything changed.

Because only three people knew that safe existed.

Me.

My father before he died.

And...

The person who had secretly shown Vanessa.

Daniel frowned.

"Once we get control..."

Vanessa interrupted.

"We sell the company."

"What about Nathan?"

She laughed.

"What about him?"

She glanced toward my motionless body.

"He'll spend the rest of his life staring at ceilings."

Neither of them noticed...

The bedroom door behind them wasn't fully closed.

Someone else was listening.

Clara.

She stood frozen in the darkness carrying the evening medicine she'd forgotten to bring.

Her hands trembled.

Her eyes filled with horror.

She had heard every word.

Vanessa suddenly turned.

"Who's there?"

Clara stepped into the light.

"I...I'm sorry, Miss. I brought Mr. Whitmore's medication."

Vanessa's smile disappeared instantly.

For several terrifying seconds...

No one spoke.

Then Vanessa slowly walked toward Clara.

"So..."

she whispered.

"How much did you hear?"

Clara swallowed.

"Only that Mr. Whitmore needs his medicine."

Vanessa stared into her eyes.

Trying to decide whether she believed her.

Finally...

She smiled.

Coldly.

"Good."

"Because servants who hear the wrong conversations..."

She leaned close enough for Clara to feel her breath.

"...have unfortunate accidents."

Clara nodded silently.

But when she turned to leave...

She caught my eyes.

For the briefest second.

She realized...

I was awake.

And I realized...

She was about to risk everything to save my life.

Neither of us knew...

The hidden camera inside my bedroom had recorded every single word Vanessa and Daniel had spoken.

Including one sentence that would destroy them forever.

May you like

"I should've made sure the brakes actually killed him."
