CHAPTER 7 — She Came Back for Revenge... But Walked Into a Trap

The security alarm rang at exactly 9:17 PM.

Not once.

Not twice.

Continuously.

Its sharp metallic scream echoed across Whitmore Estate, cutting through the quiet evening like a warning from the past.

Marcus was already moving before the second alarm sounded.

He pressed a finger against the earpiece hidden beneath his collar.

"All teams to Position Alpha."

"Lock every entrance."

"No one goes outside."

Within seconds, security vehicles raced across the estate.

Steel gates slammed shut.

Floodlights ignited one after another, turning the gardens as bright as daylight.

Clara looked at me, her face pale.

"She's really coming."

I calmly folded my father's letter and slipped it back into its envelope.

"Yes."

"Aren't you afraid?"

I smiled faintly.

"I've spent weeks pretending to be helpless."

"I'm tired of pretending."

Marcus handed me a small earpiece.

"Our drones spotted three SUVs approaching from the east road."

"Three?"

"Vanessa didn't come alone."

Five minutes later...

The lead vehicle rolled through the open front gate.

Not because security had failed.

Because I had ordered them to let it in.

Marcus frowned.

"You want them inside?"

"I want them to believe they've won."

The same mistake Vanessa had made.

The black SUVs stopped in front of the mansion.

Eight people stepped out.

Most wore dark jackets and baseball caps.

Professional.

Disciplined.

Not ordinary criminals.

Vanessa climbed out last.

She no longer looked like the elegant socialite who had once dominated charity galas.

Her expensive hair was tied back carelessly.

The designer clothes were gone.

The diamond ring had disappeared.

Only her hatred remained.

She stared at the mansion with burning eyes.

"I built this place with him..."

she muttered.

"And now I'll take everything."

Inside the security control room, dozens of monitors showed every angle.

Marcus zoomed in.

One guard frowned.

"She's carrying something."

The image sharpened.

A handgun.

Silence filled the room.

Marcus looked toward me.

"That changes everything."

I shook my head.

"No."

"It confirms everything."

Vanessa walked confidently toward the front entrance.

She didn't bother knocking.

She kicked the massive oak door open.

The sound echoed throughout the mansion.

"Nathan!"

Her voice bounced through the marble halls.

"I know you're here!"

No answer.

She laughed.

"Still hiding?"

Her men spread through the first floor.

Searching.

Breaking open doors.

Destroying priceless furniture.

Exactly as expected.

Meanwhile...

I wasn't inside the mansion.

I was beneath it.

Few people knew Whitmore Estate had been built over an old emergency bunker dating back to my grandfather's time.

The hidden control room contained live feeds from over one hundred cameras.

Every hallway.

Every staircase.

Every room.

Including one Vanessa believed had no surveillance.

The master bedroom.

"There."

Marcus pointed at the monitor.

Vanessa had entered my bedroom alone.

She slowly walked toward the wheelchair still sitting beside the bed.

The same chair she had mocked.

The same chair she believed represented my weakness.

She laughed bitterly.

"You pathetic fool."

Then...

She raised the handgun.

And fired.

BANG!

The bullet tore through the empty wheelchair.

Then another.

And another.

Wood splintered.

Metal twisted.

The chair collapsed.

Vanessa lowered the gun, breathing heavily.

"There."

she whispered.

"Now you're really broken."

No one in the bunker spoke.

Marcus quietly saved the footage.

"Attempted murder."

I corrected him.

"No."

"Premeditated murder."

"She believed I was sitting there."

Suddenly, another camera caught my attention.

"Wait..."

I leaned closer.

"Where's Clara?"

Marcus looked around the screens.

She wasn't in the control room.

She wasn't in the safe area.

She wasn't with security.

My heartbeat quickened for the first time that night.

"Find her."

Every monitor switched rapidly.

Kitchen.

Garage.

Library.

Ballroom.

Nothing.

Then...

Camera Thirty-Seven.

The greenhouse.

Clara stood alone among the roses.

She wasn't trapped.

She had gone there willingly.

Before security could reach her...

Vanessa appeared at the greenhouse entrance.

Both women froze.

For several seconds...

Neither moved.

Then Vanessa smiled.

"I was hoping I'd find you."

Clara didn't run.

Instead, she quietly asked,

"Why are you doing this?"

Vanessa laughed.

"Because everything that should've been mine..."

She pointed the gun directly at Clara.

"...became yours."

"You stole him."

Clara shook her head.

"No."

"You threw him away."

The words landed harder than any slap.

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

She stepped forward, the barrel of the gun only inches from Clara's chest.

"You think he loves you?"

"He only pities you."

Clara's voice remained calm.

"No."

"He respects me."

For the first time in her life...

Someone had answered Vanessa without fear.

Vanessa's finger tightened on the trigger.

Inside the bunker, Marcus reached for his weapon.

"I'm going in."

I stopped him.

"No."

Marcus stared at me.

"She'll shoot."

I stood.

Fully.

No wheelchair.

No hesitation.

Then I looked every member of my security team in the eye.

"Open the greenhouse."

They looked confused.

"The emergency roof."

Marcus understood first.

A slow smile crossed his face.

"You're ending it tonight."

Thirty seconds later...

Hydraulic motors roared to life.

The entire glass roof of the greenhouse began sliding open.

Vanessa looked upward in confusion.

Bright searchlights flooded the room from above.

Helicopters circled overhead.

Police snipers appeared on surrounding rooftops.

More than fifty armed officers emerged from every direction.

Loudspeakers thundered across the estate.

"Vanessa Collins!"

"Drop your weapon!"

"You are completely surrounded!"

Her face turned white.

She turned toward Clara...

Planning to use her as a hostage.

But before she could reach her...

A familiar voice echoed through the greenhouse.

"Don't."

Vanessa slowly turned around.

Her eyes widened in horror.

Nathan Whitmore...

Walked calmly through the shattered glass doorway.

No wheelchair.

No limp.

No weakness.

Just steady footsteps.

Each one shattered another piece of the lie she had believed.

She whispered only two words.

"Impossible..."

I stopped less than ten feet away.

"It became impossible..."

I said quietly.

"...the day you underestimated the only person who never betrayed me."

Without taking my eyes off Vanessa...

I reached out my hand.

Clara looked at it for one brief moment.

Then she placed her trembling hand in mine.

For the first time...

She didn't stand behind me.

She stood beside me.

Vanessa stared at our joined hands.

Her entire world collapsed in that single moment.

Because she finally understood the one thing money could never buy.

Loyalty.

And as the police closed in from every direction...

May you like

Her trembling finger tightened on the trigger one last time...
