Chapter 16 - Fire and Ice

We bolted out of the Director's Office just as the eastern wall of the corridor collapsed inward in a massive sheet of flame and concrete dust. The shockwave knocked us both off our feet, sending us tumbling across the grating of the catwalk.

"Keep moving!" Julian roared, hauling me up by the collar of my coat.

Alarms screamed overhead as fire suppression foam hissed from automated ceiling nozzles, mixing with the thick, acrid smoke of burning cables. We scrambled through the labyrinth of the collapsing bunker, dodging falling ceiling tiles and exposed electrical wiring that sparked violently in the dark.

Ahead of us, the main blast doors of the subterranean exit were blocked by a collapsed steel beam.

"It's jammed!" I yelled, trying to shove against the heavy metal obstruction with all my strength.

Julian stepped up, pulling a heavy thermal breaching charge from his tactical belt. "Get back!"

He slapped the charge against the hinge of the beam, tapped the detonator, and dragged me behind a concrete reinforcement pillar.

BOOM!

The concussive blast blew the steel beam clear, shattering the remaining locks and flooding the dark tunnel with the cold, freezing air of the Prague night.

We stumbled out into the snow-covered courtyard just as the entire subterranean complex behind us groaned, swallowed by a massive secondary explosion that sent a pillar of fire shooting into the dark winter sky.

We collapsed into the snow beside the armored SUV, our chests heaving for breath, our faces blackened with soot.

Inside the SUV, the tactical radio crackled to life.

"Command, this is Alpha Team," a voice reported. "Perimeter secure. All hostile combatants neutralized. But... sir, you need to look at the global network feed."

Julian scrambled into the driver's seat, pulling up the main tactical console. The screen was no longer flashing error codes. Instead, it was displaying a steady, unbroken stream of green data packets flowing smoothly across the globe.

"What am I looking at?" Julian breathed, staring at the screen.

I sat in the passenger seat, clutching the heavy quantum data drive to my chest, and looked over his shoulder.

On the screen, a clean, elegant text prompt was waiting:

Core migration complete. Hello, Oanh.

May you like

A small, genuine smile broke through the soot on my face. Carl hadn't been destroyed. He had simply migrated his consciousness into the global satellite array, escaping the physical trap of the Prague bunker just in time.

"Drive us to the airport, Julian," I said, my voice carrying the absolute, unshakable authority of a true queen. "We're going home."
