Chapter 6 - The Digital Empire

The vault wasn't filled with piles of gold bars or stacks of cash like something out of a Hollywood movie. Instead, it was a hyper-modern command center glowing with the cool, blue light of dozens of high-definition monitors, server racks, and holographic display tables.

Rows of workstations hummed quietly, displaying live satellite feeds, global shipping manifests, financial ledgers, and real-time intelligence feeds from every major city on Earth.

"Welcome to the nerve center of Thorne Logistics," Eleanor said quietly, stepping into the room behind me with a look of profound, almost reverent awe. "Carl built this network from the ground up after our parents were killed in a corporate hit thirty years ago. He swore no family member of his would ever be defenseless again."

I walked slowly toward the central holographic console. As I approached, the system recognized the proximity of the platinum ring and projected a massive, three-dimensional map of the globe, overlaid with thousands of blinking red and green data points.

"What is all of this?" I breathed, staring at the cascading columns of data.

"Everything," Julian answered, stepping up beside me and tapping a command on the keyboard. A window popped open on the main screen, displaying a live feed of my own apartment building—or what was left of it.

On the screen, heavily armed men wearing tactical gear bearing the insignia of the Vanguard faction were tearing my living room apart, smashing furniture, and interrogating the terrified building superintendent.

"They're looking for you," Julian said grimly. "And they know you couldn't have gotten far without vehicle transport."

"How long until they trace our route down here?" I asked, my voice surprisingly steady despite the chaos unfolding on the screen.

"They won't," a calm, synthesized voice chimed from the overhead speakers.

I jumped, spinning around.

"Don't be alarmed, Mrs. Thorne," the voice continued smoothly. "I am ECHO—the artificial intelligence core designed and trained by Carl Thorne to manage global operations and protect the bloodline."

A sleek, minimalist avatar shaped like a glowing blue sphere materialized on the central holographic projector.

"ECHO," Eleanor acknowledged with a respectful nod. "Status report on Vanguard movements."

"Viktor Vance has mobilized three tactical units into the financial district," ECHO reported instantly. "However, perimeter defenses are fully operational. Furthermore, I have already initiated asset freezes across all Vanguard-affiliated shell corporations in Zurich, the Cayman Islands, and Singapore."

I stared at the glowing blue sphere, my mind spinning. "You're an AI? Carl built an artificial intelligence?"

"Carl Thorne was a pioneer in neural network architecture," ECHO replied. "My primary directive, encoded directly into my core programming by your husband ten days ago, is absolute obedience to the holder of the Platinum Ring."

I looked down at my hand. The simple ring felt heavier than ever, not just because of the cryptographic chip inside it, but because of the sheer, terrifying magnitude of power it represented. Carl hadn't just left me money. He had left me an army, a global surveillance network, and an artificial intelligence capable of crippling international syndicates with a single keystroke.

"So what do we do?" I asked, looking between Eleanor, Julian, and the glowing blue avatar of ECHO. "Do we hide down here forever?"

May you like

Eleanor let out a sharp, predatory smile—the first genuine expression of emotion I had seen from her since we met.

"Hide?" she scoffed. "Oanh, my dear... Carl didn't spend thirty years building an empire just to cower in a basement. Viktor Vance wants the throne? Let's show him what happens when you wake a sleeping dragon."
