Chapter 8 - Face to Face

The heavy steel doors of the assembly hall slid open with a deep, mechanical groan.
Footsteps echoed through the corridor—slow, deliberate, confident. A tall man in a tailored dark overcoat walked into the vault, flanked by two elite bodyguards holding tactical shields.
Viktor Vance.
His face was weathered, carved with the hard lines of a man who had survived decades of cartel wars and corporate espionage. He stopped in the center of the vault, looking around at the hyper-modern server racks and holographic displays with a look of hungry, undisguised greed.
"Magnificent," Viktor murmured, his voice smooth and cold as ice. "Carl always did have exquisite taste in real estate. To think he hid all of this right beneath the city's nose while he was wasting away in that pathetic little house."
He turned his gaze toward us, his eyes locking instantly onto me.
"And you must be the little hospice volunteer. The grieving widow. Tell me, did you actually fall for his dying-man routine, or were you playing the long game just like the rest of us?"
I stepped out from behind the central console, my chin held high. The fear that had paralyzed me just hours ago was gone, replaced by a cold, steady resolve.
"Carl wasn't running a routine, Viktor," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the vaulted chamber. "He was giving you enough rope to hang yourself."
Viktor chuckled, a dry, grating sound. "A bit dramatic for a girl who was changing bedpans a week ago. But let's not waste time on sentimentality. The encryption keys are tied to the platinum ring on your finger. You can hand it over willingly, and I'll make sure you live out your days on a very comfortable private island. Or, my men can separate the ring from your finger the hard way."
The two bodyguards stepped forward, raising their weapons.
Julian and Eleanor didn't even flinch. They simply stood silently behind me, their hands resting on their sidearms.
"You think you've won because you walked into my vault, Viktor?" I asked calmly, tilting my head.
He frowned slightly. "Excuse me?"
"ECHO," I said clearly. "Lock down all exterior exits. Global lockdown protocol omega."
Before Viktor could react, the heavy steel doors behind him slammed shut with a deafening crash, followed by the metallic clack of a dozen secondary locks engaging simultaneously.
Simultaneously, the main monitors along the walls flickered, shifting from live tactical feeds to financial spreadsheets, bank transfer records, and intelligence dossiers.
"What is this?" Viktor demanded, spinning around to look at the screens.
"This," ECHO's synthesized voice echoed through the room, "is the complete financial ledger of the Vanguard syndicate. Every shell corporation, every bribe paid to local politicians, every illegal shipment routed through the port over the last fifteen years."
Viktor's face drained of color in an instant. He lunged forward toward the console, but Julian stepped into his path, leveling a pistol directly at his chest.
"Game over, Viktor," Julian said coldly.
"You can't do this!" Viktor snarled, turning back to me with pure venom in his eyes. "Carl Thorne is dead! You're just a nobody! You have no idea what forces you're playing with!"
May you like
"I'm not a nobody anymore, Viktor," I said softly, walking right up to him until I was standing just inches away. I raised my left hand, letting the heavy platinum ring catch the blue light of the holographic display.
"I'm Mrs. Thorne. And your empire belongs to me now."
