Chapter 2 - The Wolves at the DoorThe sun had barely risen over my cramped, second-floor apartment when the illusion of safety shattered completely.

Arthur Sterling had spent the entire night setting up secure encrypted networks, laying out stacks of legal documents across my modest kitchen table, and explaining the labyrinthine corporate structures of Vance Global. I learned that my new inheritance wasn't just cash in a bank account; it was a complex web of holdings that controlled everything from global shipping lanes to private intelligence agencies.
"If Marcus and David get their hands on the primary holding certificate before the market opens at nine o'clock, they can freeze the assets under an emergency probate clause," Arthur warned, his fingers flying across a secure satellite laptop. "They will claim undue influence—that a dying, delirious old man was manipulated by his young volunteer caretaker."
"Can they do that?" I asked, gripping a cold cup of coffee. My hands were still shaking, but a cold, hard resolve was beginning to replace the shock. Julian Vance had watched over me for twenty years. He had given me his name, his protection, and his legacy. The least I could do was not let his monsters tear it apart.
"Legally? No. The marriage was witnessed, documented, and fully certified," Arthur said, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "Practically? In the corporate world, legality is just a suggestion until you enforce it with absolute power."
Before Arthur could finish his sentence, a violent, rhythmic pounding echoed against my front door.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
It wasn't a polite knock. It was the sound of authority demanding submission.
"They're here," Arthur whispered, not looking up from his screen. "Remember, Sarah: you are no longer the charity worker who cleans up after the sick. You are the legal spouse of Julian Vance. Act like it."
I took a deep breath, walked across the small living room, and pulled the door open.
Standing in the hallway was a man who looked like he had stepped out of a high-end fashion magazine, except his face was twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated venom. Behind him stood four massive security guards in identical black suits, their earpieces glowing with faint blue LED lights.
"Well, well, well," the man sneered, pushing past me without an invitation. He stepped right into my tiny living room, his eyes scanning the cheap laminate flooring with utter disgust. "So this is the little gold-digger who tricked a dying old man into signing away a multi-billion-dollar empire."
This had to be Marcus Vance—Julian’s nephew. He possessed the same sharp jawline described in Julian's private files, but his eyes lacked any trace of humanity. They were cold, dead, and greedy.
"You're trespassing," I said, my voice surprisingly steady. I didn't flinch. I stood my ground right in the middle of the room, channeling every ounce of the fierce grace Julian had written about in his letter.
Marcus laughed—a sharp, condescending sound. "Trespassing? Sweetheart, this entire apartment building—hell, this entire block—belongs to Vance Global. And as for the 'fortune' you think you've won? It's an illusion. Uncle Julian lost his mind months ago. The board has already declared his final directives null and void due to mental incompetence."
"That is incorrect, Mr. Vance," a calm, chilling voice cut through the tension.
Arthur Sterling stepped out from the kitchen, holding a thick leather-bound folio. He looked at Marcus the way a scientist looks at a particularly irritating laboratory specimen.
Marcus’s face contorted with fury as he locked eyes with the lawyer. "Sterling. I should have known you were behind this rat-nest. You aided and abetted an old man's senile delusions. Hand over the certificates, or I'll have you disbarred, bankrupt, and rotting in a federal penitentiary by sunset."
"You are welcome to try, Marcus," Arthur replied smoothly, stepping directly between Marcus and me. "However, before you make any more empty threats, you might want to look at your phone. The markets have just opened. And Vance Global's primary voting shares have just officially transferred to Mrs. Sarah Vance."

Marcus froze. His hand instinctively dove into his designer jacket, pulling out his smartphone.
As his eyes scanned the screen, the color drained completely from his face. His mouth opened, but no words came out. The multi-billion-dollar empire he had spent his entire life waiting to inherit had just slipped through his fingers—and it belonged entirely to the hospice volunteer he had just called a gold-digger.
