Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush"You think a piece of paper makes you invincible?" Marcus hissed, his voice dropping an octave as his initial shock curdled into pure, desperate malice. He stepped forward, towering over me. "The board of directors answers to me and David. We control the operations, the contracts, and the heavy machinery of this corporation. You’re a nobody from a housing project. In twenty-four hours, we'll ruin you so thoroughly you'll be begging to crawl back to the streets."

"That's enough, Marcus," Arthur said sharply, his hand resting inside his jacket where the subtle outline of a licensed firearm rested. "The car is waiting downstairs, Mrs. Vance. It's time for your first official appearance at corporate headquarters."

I looked at Marcus one last time. The fear that had paralyzed me just hours ago was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, burning clarity. Julian had protected me in the shadows for two decades. Now, it was my turn to step into the light and protect his legacy.

"Let's go, Arthur," I said, my voice echoing clearly in the small apartment.

We walked past Marcus and his guards without another word. As I stepped out into the crisp morning air, a sleek, bulletproof black Mercedes Maybach was idling at the curb. The chauffeur, a towering man with a military posture, immediately opened the door for me.

Inside, the interior smelled of rich leather and aged cedar. But my mind wasn't on the luxury. It was fixed entirely on what lay ahead: the Vance Global skyscraper, where a room full of arrogant executives was waiting to devour me alive.

When the Maybach pulled up to the towering glass monolith downtown, a sea of cameras and reporters immediately swarmed the vehicle. Flashes blinded me through the tinted windows. The news of Julian Vance's secret marriage and multi-billion-dollar inheritance had leaked to the press—likely courtesy of Marcus himself, who had hoped to create a public scandal to pressure the board.

“Mrs. Vance! Is it true you manipulated a dying man?” “How do you respond to allegations of fraud?”

The questions screamed through the glass as security guards cleared a path for us. I took a deep breath, placed my hand on the cool metal door handle, and pushed it open.

I didn't cower. I didn't hide my face. I stepped out onto the marble pavement wearing a simple, elegant black blazer Arthur had provided, holding my head high. I caught the eye of a leading investigative reporter, held his gaze for a fraction of a second, and walked straight through the glass revolving doors.

Up in the executive boardroom on the seventieth floor, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Twelve men and women sat around a massive mahogany conference table. They were the titans of industry—board members who had run the company like a private fiefdom while Julian was sick. At the head of the table sat David Vance, Marcus’s older and far more dangerous brother. Unlike Marcus, who relied on loud intimidation, David was calculating, cold, and possessed a terrifying intellect.

As I walked into the room accompanied by Arthur, the murmurs around the table instantly died down.

David stood up slowly, leaning his palms against the mahogany table. He looked at me with a sickeningly sweet smile that didn't reach his dead eyes.

"Well, look who decided to grace us with her presence," David purred, his voice smooth as silk. "Welcome to the slaughterhouse, little girl. Let's get one thing straight: you might have conned our uncle into a deathbed marriage certificate, but this board votes on who actually runs the day-to-day operations. And right now, we unanimously vote to reject your claim, freeze your assets, and audit every single cent you ever received from Julian."

The board members nodded in unison, a chorus of silent agreement filling the room. They thought they had trapped me. They thought I was a naive girl who would break under pressure.

They had no idea who I really was. And more importantly, they had no idea what Julian had left me in the final envelope.
