Chapter 4 - SECRETS IN THE BASEMENTThree days had passed since Victoria’s dramatic arrest.

The corporate fallout was catastrophic. Stock prices of Kincaid Enterprises plummeted to historic lows, and the board unanimously stepped down, handing emergency control of the entire conglomerate over to me. But corporate power meant nothing compared to what mattered most: Emily and Lily were finally safe in our home, eating warm meals, sleeping in real beds, and laughing without looking over their shoulders.
Yet, a dark shadow still lingered in the back of my mind.
During her interrogation, Victoria had remained shockingly smug. Even as federal prosecutors laid out airtight evidence—including Dr. Carter's full confession and the financial paper trail linking her offshore accounts to the kidnappers—Victoria had leaned forward across the interrogation table and whispered just three words to the agent:
“Check the vault.”
She wasn't talking about the corporate bank vaults. She meant the underground safe hidden beneath the original Kincaid family estate in the countryside—a fortress built by my grandfather during the Cold War.
Late at night, while Emily and Lily slept peacefully upstairs, I drove out to the desolate family estate. The wind howled through the decaying oak trees, whipping the dead autumn leaves across the gravel driveway. The manor looked haunted, its windows dark and hollow.
I parked my car, grabbed a heavy-duty flashlight and a crowbar, and descended the moss-covered stone steps leading to the basement.
The heavy steel door at the bottom of the stairs was locked with an old-school combination dial and a digital biometric scanner. Fortunately, federal agents had seized Victoria’s personal cipher logs during the raid, giving me the override codes.
I punched in the sequence.
Clack. Whir.
The massive steel door hissed open, releasing a wave of damp, stale air that smelled of old dust and aged paper. I stepped inside, sweeping my flashlight beam across the dark room.
Rows of filing cabinets lined the concrete walls. Old ledgers, confidential land deeds, and corporate blackmails. But as I walked deeper into the vault, I noticed something strange.
Tucked away in the far corner was a modern biometric server rack, humming quietly in the dark. Connected to it was a single computer monitor displaying a blinking red cursor and a folder labeled simply: PROMETHEUS.
I sat down in the swivel chair, my heart pounding, and clicked the folder open.
What I saw on that screen made the blood freeze in my veins. It wasn't just corporate corruption. It was a dossier on me. Every medical record, every therapy session I attended after Emily's "death," every psychological evaluation... and a series of encrypted video logs recorded by my mother over the last two years.
I clicked the most recent video file, dated just two days before her arrest.
The screen flickered to life. Victoria appeared on camera, staring directly into the lens with a terrifying, knowing smile.
"If you're watching this, Daniel," her recorded voice whispered through the speakers, echoing in the empty vault, "it means you found my little sanctuary. You thought you outsmarted me, didn't you? You thought arresting me was the end of the game."
She leaned closer to the camera, her eyes gleaming with absolute madness.
"You never wondered why I chose Emily, did you? You thought it was just about corporate control of the will. How naive. Emily carries a secret in her bloodline, Daniel—a secret I spent thirty years burying. And now that she’s back... the countdown has officially begun. You're already dead."
Before I could process her words, the heavy steel door behind me slammed shut with a deafening crash.

Clang.
The electronic lock engaged. The lights in the vault flickered out, plunging me into absolute pitch blackness.
