Chapter 8 - BLOOD AND INKThe heavy steel door slid open with a soft hiss, and the woman stepped into the loft, shaking the morning mist from the shoulders of her trench coat.

She looked around the high-end safehouse with an expression of mild amusement, as if inspecting a cheap hotel room. Her eyes finally landed on me, standing rigid by the kitchen island with my hand resting on the hidden grip of my firearm.

"Put the gun down, Daniel," she said, her voice smooth, calm, and laced with an eerie familiarity. "If I wanted you dead, you would have stopped breathing before the elevator doors even finished opening."

"Who the hell are you?" I demanded, keeping the weapon leveled at her chest, my finger resting lightly on the trigger. "How did you bypass the federal-grade encryption on this door?"

The woman let out a soft, mocking laugh. She walked over to the kitchen counter, picked up a clean glass, poured herself a glass of water, and took a slow sip.

"Family manners haven't improved much in this house, I see," she murmured, turning to face me. "As for how I bypassed the door—let’s just say your father’s old security protocols had a master backdoor. One that Victoria spent thirty years trying to erase, and that I spent thirty years learning to exploit."

She stepped closer into the light, and the resemblance became undeniable. The jawline, the piercing gaze, the absolute aura of untouchable control.

"My name is Victoria’s worst nightmare," she said softly. "Or, if you prefer a simpler title... your older sister. Cassandra Kincaid."

The room seemed to spin. Cassandra? My father had never mentioned a sister. Victoria had buried my past, rewritten my history, and built an empire on a mountain of deception.

"That's impossible," I breathed, lowering the gun slightly despite my better judgment. "Father never spoke of you. Victoria erased you."

"Victoria tried to," Cassandra corrected, her eyes flashing with a sudden, dangerous intensity. "She didn't just erase me, Daniel—she tried to throw me into the freezing river when I was five years old because I stood between her and total control of the Kincaid fortune. Our father managed to smuggle me out of the country to Europe, but he was too weak to finish what he started. He let Victoria keep ruling."

She set the glass down and walked toward the hallway leading to the bedrooms.

"Where do you think you're going?" I snapped, stepping into her path.

Cassandra stopped, looking at me with genuine pity. "Relax, little brother. I’m not here to hurt your wife or your child. In fact, I’m the only reason they survived last night."

I froze. "What are you talking about?"

"Who do you think leaked the coordinates of the underground vault to the federal investigators? Who do you think tipped off the fire department before Victoria's loyalists could burn the entire estate to ash with your family inside?" Cassandra smiled coldly. "Victoria thought she was the master puppeteer. But she was just playing a game I started years ago."

Before I could process her words, the secure terminal on the wall flashed violently.

ALERT: PERIMETER BREACH. MULTIPLE TARGETS DETECTED IN THE LOBBY.

Cassandra’s expression hardened instantly. She pulled a sleek, encrypted tablet from her coat and slammed it down onto the kitchen island.

"They found us," she said sharply. "Victoria’s hidden syndicate—the real inner circle—just mobilized. And they aren't here to negotiate. They're here to finish the Kincaid bloodline once and for all."
