Chapter 2 - The Red Carpet AmbushThe flashbulbs continued to pop like miniature lightning bolts as Ethan escorted Vanessa toward the grand marble steps of the courthouse exit. Reporters swarmed around them like bees to honey, eager for every juicy detail of the high-society divorce.

"Mr. Carter, any comment on the alimony figures?" shouted a reporter from the Columbus Dispatch.

Ethan chuckled, a rich, confident sound that echoed off the high ceiling. "Let's just say my former wife received a fair settlement. Generous, even. Considering she brought nothing to the table when we married ten years ago, I think she should be thanking me."

My mother let out a sharp gasp beside me, her hands trembling with rage. "The ungrateful, narcissistic bastard! Charlotte, tell me you're going to destroy him right now. Please tell me!"

"Patience, Mom," I said smoothly, resting a hand gently on her arm. "Let him finish his performance. The higher they climb, the harder the gravity hits."

Marcus checked his watch, a nervous grin spreading across his face. "Give it two minutes, Charlotte. The stock market opens its secondary tech trading block at 10:15. If the corporate restructure notices hit the SEC wire..."

Before Marcus could even finish his sentence, the heavy glass doors of the courthouse burst open from the outside, driven by a frantic-looking man in a sweat-soaked bespoke Armani suit.

It was Julian Vance, Ethan’s Chief Financial Officer and right-hand man.

Julian’s face was the color of skim milk. His hair, usually meticulously gelled back, was plastered to his forehead. He wasn't holding a briefcase; he was clutching a tablet like it might explode at any second. He scanned the crowded lobby in sheer panic until his eyes landed on Ethan.

"Ethan!" Julian shrieked, his voice cracking violently over the din of the reporters. "Ethan, thank God! You have to come back to the office right now! Everything is falling apart!"

Ethan’s triumphant smile faltered, replaced instantly by a look of sharp, corporate irritation. He stepped away from the cameras, scowling at his CFO. "Julian, keep your voice down. Can't you see I'm talking to the press? What kind of amateur hour emergency could possibly—"

"It's not an emergency, Ethan, it's an extinction event!" Julian interrupted, waving the tablet frantically. "The board accounts! They're... they're completely locked out!"

A collective murmur rippled through the gathered reporters. Microphones instantly pivoted from Ethan toward the trembling CFO.

"What do you mean, locked out?" Ethan demanded, his voice dropping into its dangerous, boardroom-control register. "Explain yourself clearly, Julian. Who locked out the executive suite?"

"I don't know!" Julian cried, beads of sweat rolling down his temples. "At exactly 10:14 AM, the primary institutional accounts at First National Bank froze all operations for Carter Technologies. Every single corporate credit line has been revoked. And—and the patent registry... Ethan, the global patents for the quantum encryption core... they don't belong to us anymore!"

Ethan let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. "Are you out of your mind? I filed those patents myself! I hold the master keys to the tech core! How could they not belong to us?"

"Because," a calm, crystal-clear voice rang out across the lobby, cutting through the chaos like a razor blade.

Every head turned.

I stepped out from the shadow of the marble pillar, my hand resting casually on my swollen stomach, my expression serene. Marcus and my mother flanked me like a royal guard.

Ethan’s eyes narrowed into slits as he glared at me. "What are you playing at, Charlotte? Did you orchestrate this little stunt just to cause a scene?"

I walked slowly toward him, my heels clicking rhythmically against the stone floor. When I stood just a few feet away from him and Vanessa, I tilted my head up, looking into the eyes of the man who had discarded me like trash five minutes prior.

"A stunt, Ethan?" I smiled faintly. "No. Stunts are temporary. What's happening right now is permanent."

"What are you talking about?" Vanessa snapped, stepping forward, her designer ivory dress rustling. "Listen to me, you pathetic little leech—your divorce is final! You have no power here anymore! Get out of our way before—"

"Before what, Vanessa?" I cut her off smoothly, my gaze shifting to her with icy amusement. "Before you realize that the man whose arm you're holding isn't a billionaire tech mogul anymore?"

Ethan bristled, stepping between Vanessa and me. "Enough of these games, Charlotte! State your demands, take your meager settlement check, and get out of my sight. Julian, call security and have them removed for harassment."

"Security can't help you, Ethan," I whispered softly.

At that exact moment, every single television screen mounted along the walls of the courthouse lobby—which had been broadcasting morning financial news—suddenly flickered, cutting away from the anchor.

A breaking news banner flashed in screaming crimson across every display:

BREAKING NEWS: CARTER TECHNOLOGIES PARENT ASSETS ACQUIRED EN TIRETY BY BENNETT GLOBAL HOLDINGS. CEO ETHAN CARTER STRIPPED OF EXECUTIVE CONTROL EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.

Ethan froze.

He slowly turned his head toward the nearest screen, his eyes widening in absolute horror as his own company's logo was replaced by the soaring falcon crest of the Bennett family empire.
