Chapter 3 - The Truth Behind the BrandThe silence in the courthouse lobby was absolute. You could have heard a pin drop on the marble floor.

Even the reporters, usually sharks smelling blood in the water, were momentarily stunned into stillness, their cameras clicking mechanically as they tried to process the unfolding corporate earthquake.
Ethan stared up at the massive flat-screen television, his face draining of all color until he looked like a ghost.
"No," Ethan whispered, shaking his head slowly, taking a step backward. "No, that's impossible. Carter Technologies was built by me. From scratch. In a garage in Cincinnati. I spent ten years of my life bleeding for that company. I am the founder! I am the majority shareholder!"
"You were an employee, Ethan," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy air with terrifying calm. I took another step closer, letting the distance between us close. "An extremely well-paid, highly confident employee who mistook administrative authority for actual ownership."
Julian, the trembling CFO, clutched his tablet against his chest like a shield, staring at me with horror. "Mrs. Carter... forgive me... but how? The shares were registered under Ethan's name! Everyone in the industry knew him as the visionary behind the tech!"
I turned my gaze to Julian, offering a polite, distant smile. "Vision is cheap, Julian. Capital and intellectual property are expensive. Ten years ago, when Ethan was indeed sitting in that garage with a brilliant idea and zero dollars to his name, who do you think funded his first patent filing?"
Ethan’s eyes snapped toward me, a sudden, horrifying realization dawning behind his pupils. "You..." he choked out. "Your father... your family trust..."
"My grandfather established the Bennett Global Holdings portfolio fifty years ago," I said clearly, ensuring every reporter's microphone caught every single word. "When Ethan and I married eleven years ago, my family saw his ambition. They decided to invest. But my father—rest his soul—was a cautious businessman. He structured the initial seed funding not as a gift, nor as a standard equity partnership, but as a conditional intellectual property loan held entirely within our family trust."
I reached into my handbag, pulled out a pristine, gold-embossed legal folder, and flipped it open just enough for them to see the official seal of the Ohio Supreme Court and the signature of Arthur Vance.
"The contract stipulated a simple clause," I continued, my voice steady and unyielding. "For ten years, Ethan Carter would serve as the public-facing CEO, building the company's market valuation while the core patents remained legally tethered to the Bennett trust. And the final condition of that ten-year agreement?"
I paused, letting my eyes lock onto Ethan's terrified gaze.
"If at any point during those ten years, or upon the exact expiration date of the contract—which happened to coincide with today, August 10th—the marriage between the primary shareholders was dissolved due to infidelity or abandonment on the executive's part... 100% of the voting stock, intellectual property, and subsidiary assets would instantly revert to the sole ownership of the Bennett lineage."
Vanessa let out a sharp gasp, her hand flying to her mouth. She looked at Ethan with sudden, undisguised panic, her fingers sliding off his arm as if his very touch was now toxic. "Ethan... what is she talking about? What is she saying?"
"It's a lie!" Ethan roared, his voice cracking with desperation as he lunged forward, though Marcus instantly stepped in front of me, blocking his path. "It's a fraudulent document! You trapped me! You engineered this entire marriage just to steal my company!"
"Steal what was mine from the very beginning?" I retorted, my tone hardening into steel. "Ethan, you never owned a single server farm. You never owned a single line of the encryption code. You were renting your success from my family name. And the moment you decided to parade your mistress around, expecting me to quietly slink away like a discarded pet... you triggered the final clause."
"Mr. Carter! Mr. Carter!" A reporter broke through the shock, shoving a microphone directly into Ethan's face. "Is it true you're being ousted from your own company? What about the pending merger with Apex Global?"
"Get that camera out of my face!" Ethan screamed, lunging blindly toward the reporter in a blind rage.
Security guards, finally snapping out of their stupor, rushed forward and grabbed Ethan by both arms, pinning him back before he could assault the journalist.
Vanessa stepped backward, putting a physical barrier of space between herself and the disgraced former CEO. Her voice, previously so sweet and condescending, was now laced with pure venom.
"Ethan," Vanessa hissed, her eyes wide with disbelief. "Tell me this isn't true. Tell me you aren't actually broke. Tell me you still have your personal accounts!"
Ethan looked at Vanessa, his face twisted in utter betrayal. "Vane—sweetheart, listen to me, we can fix this—"

"Don't 'sweetheart' me, you pathetic fraud!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing off the marble walls. "I didn't spend the last eight months being your sidepiece just to end up dating a jobless nobody! We are done! Do you hear me? We are completely done!"
She turned on her heel, hoisted up her expensive ivory dress, and sprinted for the exit, shoving past reporters without a single backward glance.
