Chapter 4 - THE SISTER’S CONFESSION

“My Sister Begged For Mercy In The Middle of the Night—But Her Secret Audio Recording Exposed The Ultimate Trap!”It was 2:00 AM when the security alarm at my Lake Forest estate chimed, alerting me that someone was at the front gate.
I looked at my security monitor.
Standing in the pouring rain, wrapped in a soaked trench coat, was Lily. She was shaking, her face pale, looking up at the security camera with pleading eyes.
I hesitated. Part of me wanted to leave her out there to freeze. But the big sister in me—the part I hated myself for still possessing—couldn't let her stand in the storm while pregnant.
I buzzed her in.
A few minutes later, Lily was shivering in my kitchen, wrapped in one of my dry robes, holding a warm cup of tea I had prepared for her.
"Thank you, Evie," she whimpered, her voice cracking. "I... I didn't know where else to go. Daniel is losing his mind. He’s drinking, screaming... he knows something is wrong, even if he hasn't figured out the whole truth yet."
"Why are you here, Lily?" I asked, standing across the kitchen island, keeping my distance. "You made your choice. You chose my husband. You chose his money."
"I didn't have a choice!" Lily sobbed, tears streaming down her face. "Julian... Julian forced me, Evie!"
I frowned. "What do you mean?"
"I was in debt. Deep debt," Lily confessed, her hands shaking around the tea mug. "I made some bad investments after college. Julian found out. He offered to pay off my debts, but only if I... if I slept with him. He’s a sick, powerful man, Evie. He threatened to ruin my reputation, to make sure I never got a job in this city. I was so scared."
She looked up at me, her eyes red and swollen.
"And then I got pregnant. When Julian found out, he panicked. He said his wife would destroy him. So he came up with the plan. He told me to seduce Daniel. He said Daniel was stupid, arrogant, and desperate for a baby. He said if Daniel believed the baby was his, we would all get what we wanted. Daniel would get his pride, I would get financial security, and Julian would be safe."
I stared at her, my heart twisting. It was a tragic story. But I had raised Lily. I knew how she looked when she was lying. And right now, her eyes were just a little too wide. Her voice was just a little too theatrical.
I glanced down at her trench coat, which was draped over the back of the barstool.
A tiny, faint blue light was blinking through the thin fabric of her pocket.
A recording device.
She was trying to get me to confess to blackmailing Julian on tape so they could throw out the terms of my settlement.
My pity evaporated, replaced by a cold, sharp fury.
"That's a very touching story, Lily," I said, taking a slow step toward her. "But you forgot one thing."
Lily blinked, her tears instantly drying up. "What?"
I reached over and snatched her trench coat. I reached into the pocket and pulled out a sleek, professional-grade digital voice recorder. I pressed the stop button and held it up to her face.
"I raised you, Lily," I whispered, my voice dangerously calm. "I know your tells. I know when you're playing the victim. You weren't forced by Julian. You targeted him. You wanted his money, and when that became too risky, you targeted my husband as a backup plan. You wanted everything I had because you’ve always been jealous of me."
Lily’s face morphed. The helpless, tearful girl vanished, replaced by a cold, sneering woman.
"Jealous of you?" Lily laughed, standing up and tossing the wet robe aside. "Of course I was jealous of you! You had the perfect life, the rich husband, the big house. And what did I have? Your scraps! Your charity! You always looked down on me, Evie. Playing the perfect, saintly big sister while I had to beg for your help."
"I gave you everything!" I shouted, my composure finally slipping. "I sacrificed my youth for you!"
"And I hated you for it!" Lily shrieked. "Every time you helped me, it just reminded me of how pathetic I was compared to you. So yes, I took Daniel. It was easy. He was so desperate for a woman who would flatter his ego instead of quietly judging him like you did. And now, I’m going to have his child—or Julian's, it doesn't matter. The Vance fortune is going to be mine, and there is nothing you can do about it."
"Actually, there is," I said, holding up the voice recorder. "You just confessed to conspiring with Julian to defraud Daniel, to blackmailing, and to using this baby as a financial weapon. And guess what, Lily?"
I pointed to the ceiling corner. A small, red security light was blinking.
"My entire kitchen is equipped with high-definition audio and video surveillance. You came into my house, wiretapped me without consent—which is a felony in the state of Illinois—and admitted to a massive fraud scheme on camera."
Lily’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror.
"Delete it," she whispered, lunging across the counter to grab my phone.
I stepped back, easily dodging her. "Get out of my house, Lily. Before I call the police and have you arrested for trespassing and attempted extortion."
Lily stared at me, her chest heaving, realizing she had completely walked into her own trap. She grabbed her purse and ran out of the house into the pouring rain, leaving her wet coat behind.

I watched her go, my heart heavy but my resolve stronger than ever.
The battle lines were drawn. And the war was about to begin.
