Chapter 5 - THE COURTROOM SHOWDOWN

“My Husband Tried To Bankrupt Me In Court—Until I Pulled Out A Secret DNA Test That Ruined His Life!”The Cook County Courthouse was packed.

This wasn't just a standard divorce hearing. Because of the high-profile nature of Daniel’s company and the public scandal at the gala, the courtroom was filled with journalists, bloggers, and curious onlookers.

Daniel sat at the defense table, looking sharp in a navy suit, flanked by a new, expensive legal team. He looked smug, whispering to his lawyer and occasionally looking back at the gallery where Lily sat, wearing a loose-fitting maternity dress, looking demure and fragile.

I sat at my table with my new attorney, Ms. Clara Vance—a legendary, fierce divorce attorney who had no relation to my husband but shared a name, which I found deliciously ironic.

"The court is now in session," Judge Miriam Sterling announced, banging her gavel. "We are here to determine the temporary division of assets and alimony in the matter of Evelyn Vance versus Daniel Vance."

Daniel’s attorney stood up immediately. "Your Honor, my client requests a complete dismissal of the plaintiff's demands for 50% of the company and the Lake Forest estate. We have evidence of extreme financial misconduct on the part of Mrs. Vance, as well as a systematic campaign of harassment against my client’s pregnant partner, Lily."

He produced a folder of documents. "Furthermore, Mrs. Vance has illegally obtained private medical records of my client’s unborn child and has attempted to blackmail my client’s brother, Julian Vance."

The courtroom whispered. Daniel smirked at me, mouthing the words, “You lose.”

"Is this true, Ms. Vance?" the Judge asked, looking at my attorney.

Clara stood up, adjusting her glasses. "Your Honor, these accusations are not only false, but they are a desperate attempt to cover up a massive, multi-million-dollar fraud scheme perpetrated by Mr. Daniel Vance, his brother Julian Vance, and the plaintiff's sister, Lily."

Clara walked to the center of the courtroom, holding a sealed manila envelope.

"We submit to the court a certified DNA paternity test, obtained via a legal court order we secured quietly last week, using a non-invasive prenatal paternity test (NIPP) from the baby currently carried by Lily."

Daniel’s lawyer stood up. "Objection, Your Honor! The paternity of the child is not relevant to this divorce proceeding!"

"It is highly relevant, Your Honor," Clara argued, her voice booming. "Because my client’s husband has publicly stated that he is leaving his wife of twenty years and stripping her of her marital assets because he is having a 'biological heir.' But this DNA test proves otherwise."

The Judge leaned forward. "Objection overruled. I will allow the evidence. Clerk, open the envelope."

The clerk took the envelope, sliced it open, and handed the document to the Judge.

The courtroom was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Daniel’s smirk began to fade, replaced by a sudden, nervous twitch in his jaw. He looked back at Lily, but Lily was staring at the floor, her hands shaking violently.

Judge Sterling read the document, her eyebrows raising in shock.

"According to this certified lab report," the Judge announced, "there is a 99.9% probability that the biological father of the child carried by Lily is... Mr. Julian Vance."

The courtroom exploded.

Reporters gasped, cameras flashed from the back row, and people stood up to get a better look.

Daniel froze. His face went from pale, to red, to a dark, terrifying purple. He slowly turned his head to look at his older brother, Julian, who was sitting in the front row of the gallery.

Julian’s face was completely blank. He slowly stood up, adjusted his coat, and walked out of the courtroom without saying a single word.

"Lily?" Daniel gasped, his voice cracking like a child’s. He turned to look at her. "Lily, tell me this is a lie. Tell me she faked this!"

Lily couldn't even look at him. She burst into hysterical tears, covering her face as she slumped in her seat.

"But that's not all, Your Honor," Clara continued, her voice cutting through the chaos. "We also submit video and audio evidence showing that Lily and Julian Vance conspired to frame my client for blackmail, and that they actively paid off my client's former attorney, Mr. Aris, to sabotage her legal defense."

Clara handed a USB drive to the clerk.

"This drive contains a full confession from Lily, recorded legally on my client’s home security system, as well as bank records showing Julian Vance transferred five hundred thousand dollars to Mr. Aris’s offshore account."

Daniel slumped into his chair, his eyes wide and vacant. His entire world—his pride, his company, his new family, his "legacy"—had just disintegrated in front of two hundred people and the entire Chicago press.

"In light of this egregious fraud and bad faith," Judge Sterling said, her voice dripping with disgust as she looked at Daniel, "this court is granting a temporary injunction. All of Mr. Daniel Vance’s personal and business assets are frozen immediately. Furthermore, Mrs. Evelyn Vance is awarded exclusive possession of the Lake Forest estate, and we will proceed to trial to discuss a 100% transfer of the construction company’s shares to the plaintiff as punitive damages for marital fraud."

The Judge banged her gavel. "Court adjourned."

I stood up, smoothing down my red suit jacket.

Daniel sat frozen at his table, tears finally spilling over his eyelids. He looked up at me, his voice trembling. "Evie... please. I didn't know. I swear I didn't know. Julian set me up. Lily set me up. They made a fool out of me."

I looked down at the man I had loved for twenty years. I felt no anger. I felt no pity.

I felt absolutely nothing.

"You made a fool out of yourself, Daniel," I said softly. "You were just too arrogant to see it."

I turned and walked out of the courtroom, the reporters parting for me like the Red Sea.
