Chapter 6 - THE ULTIMATE PLOT TWIST

“My Ex-Husband and Sister Thought They Ruined Me—But My New Husband Just Bought Their Entire Lives!”Six Months Later.
The chilly autumn wind blew off Lake Michigan, rustling the gold and red leaves around the perimeter of my beautiful new penthouse overlooking downtown Chicago.
The divorce was finalized. I didn't just win; I dismantled them.
Because of the massive fraud and conspiracy charges, Daniel’s company had faced a complete hostile takeover. I had used the settlement money and Julian’s forced debt restructuring to buy out 100% of the company's shares. Daniel was left bankrupt, his reputation ruined, and his name dragged through the mud. He now lived in a tiny, one-bedroom apartment on the south side, working as an assistant manager at a local hardware store.
Julian’s wife had divorced him, taking 70% of his wealth and pulling all banking support from his investment funds. He was no longer a billionaire; he was a disgraced, middle-aged man facing multiple federal lawsuits for financial misconduct.
And Lily?
Lily had given birth to a healthy baby boy three weeks ago. But because of her role in the extortion and fraud scheme, she had been sentenced to three years of probation, and Julian’s ex-wife’s lawyers had ensured she would never see a single penny of the Vance family trust. She was a single mother, living on government assistance, completely ignored by the high society she had sold her soul to join.
I stood on my balcony, sipping a glass of expensive Cabernet, enjoying the quiet success of my new life.
A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped around my waist from behind.
I leaned back into the chest of the man holding me, a soft smile spreading across my face.
"You look beautiful tonight, Evelyn," a deep, smooth voice whispered in my ear.
I turned around, looking into the piercing blue eyes of Marcus Vance—the private investigator who had helped me destroy my ex-husband.
But Marcus wasn't just a private investigator.
He was the rightful heir to the Vance family fortune.
He was the estranged, oldest son of Daniel and Julian’s father from his first marriage—the one who had been written out of the will thirty years ago because of a bitter family feud. Marcus had spent his entire life waiting for the perfect moment to take back what belonged to him.
And I had been his perfect key.
"Did the final paperwork go through?" I asked, tracing the lapel of his tailored suit jacket.
"Yes, my love," Marcus smiled, pulling a document from his pocket. "As of 4:00 PM today, the merger is complete. Vance Construction and my investment firm are now one entity. We own every single building, every single contract, and every single piece of land Daniel and Julian ever touched."
He leaned down, kissing me deeply, a kiss that tasted of victory, power, and a brilliant, unyielding future.
"They thought they were playing chess, Evie," Marcus whispered against my lips. "But they didn't realize we owned the board."
I looked out over the glittering skyline of Chicago, the city that had watched me get publicly humiliated just six months ago.
Now, the city belonged to me.

I smiled, raising my glass to the sparkling lights below.
“To new chapters,” I whispered. “And to always playing to win.”
