Chapter 1

At 1:45 a.m., as a violent storm rattled the windows of their mansion in Bosques de las Lomas, Adriana Salgado's phone vibrated on the table.

It was Hospital Español.

Her father, Don Esteban Salgado, had suffered a massive heart attack.

The doctors couldn't save him.

Adriana stood frozen, her coat clutched tightly in her hands.

She had barely managed to say she was coming immediately when Mauricio Alcázar appeared in the hallway, wearing a silk robe and holding a glass of brandy.

“Now what's all the drama about?” he asked.

“My father passed away. I have to go say goodbye to him.”

Mauricio showed neither surprise nor compassion.

He walked to the front door...

Turned the lock...

Slipped the key into his pocket...

Then whistled.

Bruno, his enormous Tibetan Mastiff, padded into the foyer.

The dog stopped beside him, visibly confused by the tension in the room.

Mauricio smirked.

“You can leave,” he said.

“But first you're going to crawl under Bruno three times.”

“Let's see if you're really willing to humiliate yourself for that old man.”

For a moment...

Adriana thought she had misheard him.

For five years, she had endured his insults.

The contempt of her mother-in-law, Ofelia.

The constant abuse from her sister-in-law, Paulina.

She had given up her career.

Cooked for the entire family.

Allowed them to treat her as though she were living off the Alcázar family's charity.

She had stayed silent even when Mauricio came home smelling of another woman's perfume.

Even when he hid his phone the moment she walked into the room.

Everyone mistook her silence for weakness...

Even though she was quietly paying debts that no one ever bothered to ask how had been settled.

But this...

Was different.

“Open the door,” Adriana said.

“Get on your knees first.”

Mauricio stroked the dog's head and smiled with the confidence of a man who believed he was untouchable.

He was the CEO of Constructora Alcázar.

His face appeared in business magazines.

He proudly claimed he had built his fortune from nothing.

What he never knew...

Was that every line of credit keeping his company alive came, directly or indirectly, from Don Esteban's financial group.

Adriana took a slow breath.

She didn't cry.

She didn't beg.

She simply took out her phone and called a number saved as "Mr. Cárdenas."

“Execute Clause One of the trust agreement,” she said.

“Suspend Constructora Alcázar's capital line immediately.”

“Notify every bank.”

“Freeze all assets connected to the company.”

“And send the legal team to the house.”

Mauricio's smile disappeared.

“What the hell did you just do?”

“I stopped protecting you.”

He lunged toward her, trying to snatch the phone from her hand.

Instead...

Adriana grabbed a heavy bronze statue.

She swung it into the door lock until the cylinder shattered.

Bruno backed away in fear.

He had never been an aggressive dog.

He was simply an animal that had been used to intimidate others.

Before stepping out into the pouring rain...

Adriana turned back one last time.

“This mansion...”

“Your luxury SUVs...”

“Your construction equipment...”

“Even your position...”

“They all exist because my father wanted to find out whether you loved me...”

“...or only wanted his money.”

Mauricio's face went pale.

“You're lying.”

Adriana looked at him without a trace of emotion.

“Tonight I lost my father.”

“And you just lost the woman who had been holding your entire life together.”

Three hours later...

The construction company's bank accounts were frozen.

The board of directors received an emergency meeting notice.

And Mauricio discovered that his name wasn't listed as the true owner of almost anything he thought he possessed.

But...
