Chapter 2 - THE DECEPTIVE PATH

I let Marcus inside, closing the door firmly behind him. He didn’t sit down. He paced the small perimeter of the motel room, his jaw clenched so tight I could hear his teeth grinding.

"Explain," I said. My voice was a flatline.

Marcus stopped pacing and looked at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of anger and deep pity. "Daniel’s business—the real estate firm—is bankrupt, Rachel. He’s been skimming from the company accounts for over a year to fund his lifestyle. He lost a massive commercial deal six months ago, and he was facing prison time for embezzlement."

I stared at him, trying to connect the dots. "What does his bankruptcy have to do with Emily’s babies?"

"Everything," Marcus said, taking a step closer. "Daniel didn't just embezzle from the firm. He took out a massive private loan. He put your house up as collateral. He signed your name on the deed paperwork while you were deployed."

My stomach dropped. The house in Fayetteville was mine. It had been left to me by my grandmother. It was the one piece of security I had. "He forged my signature?"

"Yes," Marcus said. "But that's not the worst of it. The lender he took the money from isn't a bank. It’s a private investor with... very shady connections. When Daniel couldn't pay, they threatened him. He was desperate. And then, Emily came to him."

"Why Emily?"

"Emily was in deep debt herself. She owed money all over town. But she had something Daniel wanted. Or rather, they had a plan. A sick, twisted plan to bail themselves both out." Marcus hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck. "Rachel, those twins... they aren't just any surrogacy or accident. Emily didn't get pregnant by some random guy. She went to a private fertility clinic in Atlanta. The same clinic you and Daniel used three years ago."

A cold sweat broke out across my collarbone. "What are you saying, Marcus?"

"When you did your IVF cycle three years ago, you produced twelve viable embryos," Marcus said slowly, delivering each word like a physical blow. "Only two were implanted, and they didn't take. You thought the rest were destroyed because you couldn't afford the storage fees anymore. But they weren't destroyed, Rachel. Daniel kept paying the storage fees secretly. He kept them in his name."

The room seemed to tilt. The walls pressed in. I could hear the sound of my own blood rushing in my ears like a roaring river.

"He... he used my embryos?" I whispered.

"He authorized the release of two of your frozen embryos to Emily," Marcus revealed, his voice shaking with disgust. "He bypassed your signature. He told the clinic you were deployed and had given written consent. Emily carried them. Those babies... Noah and Nora. They aren't just your sister’s kids. Rachel... they are your biological children."

I collapsed onto the edge of the bed, the breath completely knocked out of my lungs.

My sister had not just stolen my husband.

She had stolen my babies.

They had used my body, my genetic material, and my deployment to create a family behind my back. And they had done it to secure a massive trust fund.

"My grandmother’s will," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a freight train. "My grandmother left a two-million-dollar trust fund. But it had a clause. It could only be unlocked when I had biological children, to ensure the family line continued. If I didn't have kids by my 35th birthday, the money would go to charity."

"Your 35th birthday is in two weeks," Marcus said grimly. "Daniel knew that if Emily gave birth to your biological children, and you 'adopted' them or accepted them as your own, the trust fund would unlock. He was going to use your own babies, carried by your sister, to pay off his debts and keep himself out of prison."

I sat in the dim motel room, my hands gripping the cheap comforter. The betrayal was so vast, so deep, that I couldn't even weep.

I looked down at the white envelope containing the twelve-week-old miracle currently growing inside me. The baby Daniel didn't know about. The baby that had been conceived naturally, against all medical odds, right before I deployed.

A fierce, burning rage ignited in my chest. It burned away the shock, the sorrow, and the fear.

They wanted a war? They had no idea who they were dealing with. I was a Captain in the United States Army. I had survived combat zones, logistical nightmares, and physical agony.

"Marcus," I said, my voice dropping an octave, cold as steel. "Do you still have access to the firm's financial records?"

May you like

Marcus looked at me, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his face. "I have everything, Rachel. What do you want to do?"

"I want to ruin them," I said. "Every single one of them."
