Chapter 6 - THE UNEXPECTED TWIST

Six Months Later
The sun was warm over the coast of Wilmington, North Carolina. A gentle breeze blew off the ocean, carrying the salty, clean scent of the Atlantic.
I sat on the porch of my new beachside cottage, rocking a double stroller with my foot.
Inside the stroller, six-month-old Noah and Nora were fast asleep, their chubby cheeks pink from the sea air.
My hand rested on my stomach. I was now seven months pregnant. A beautiful, prominent bump that I no longer had to hide.
Daniel was gone. He had pleaded guilty to treason, grand larceny, and child endangerment. He was currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole in a supermax federal prison.
Emily had cut a deal. She testified against Daniel in exchange for a reduced sentence of fifteen years. She would spend her youth behind bars, a fitting punishment for a sister who had tried to steal my life.
Because of their criminal convictions, and because Marcus and Evelyn had proven the clinic's medical fraud, the court had terminated Emily's maternal rights and Daniel's paternal rights completely. Noah and Nora were legally, officially, and biologically mine.
And the grandmother's trust fund? It had unlocked. But I didn't keep a single cent of it for myself. I used it to establish a foundation for children of military families who had suffered from domestic trauma.
A shadow fell over the porch.
Marcus stepped up onto the wooden deck, carrying two cups of iced coffee. He had left the real estate firm and was now working as a private security consultant. But more importantly, he had been by my side every single day of the trial, the birth prep, and the recovery.
"How are the recruits?" Marcus asked with a smile, handing me a cup.
"Sleeping," I whispered, smiling back. "For now."
Marcus sat in the chair next to me, his hand naturally finding mine. "I spoke to the lawyer today. The final adoption paperwork for Noah and Nora is official. No one can ever touch them, Rachel. They are yours."
"Ours," I corrected him gently.
Marcus looked at my stomach, his eyes softening. "And the little one?"
"Kicking like a future Ranger," I laughed.
We looked out over the ocean, the waves crashing peacefully against the shore.
But as I leaned back in my chair, enjoying the peace I had fought so hard to win, my phone buzzed on the table.
It was an restricted number.
I hesitated, then picked it up. "Hello?"
"Rachel."
The voice was raspy, distant, and cold.
It was Daniel. Calling from a prison phone.
"Daniel," I said, my voice showing no emotion. "You shouldn't be calling this number."
"I just wanted to congratulate you," Daniel whispered, a chilling, dry chuckle echoing through the line. "I heard you’re pregnant. Seven months, right?"
"How do you know that?"
"I know everything, Rachel. But there's one little detail you and your hotshot lawyer missed during the IVF fraud trial."
A sudden, icy grip seized my chest. "What are you talking about?"
"You think those twins are your biological children with me," Daniel whispered, his voice dripping with malice. "You think I used my own sperm with your embryos. But I knew you’d find out eventually. I knew you’d try to take them from me."
"Daniel, stop playing games," I warned, my hand tightening around the phone.
"I'm not playing, Rachel," Daniel laughed. "Go look at the clinic records again. The ones from the night I authorized the release. I didn't use my sperm, Rachel. I didn't want my DNA anywhere near a paper trail that could lead back to me if the fraud was exposed."
My breath hitched. "Whose... whose DNA did you use?"
"The clinic had a high-profile donor," Daniel whispered. "A military officer. Your commanding officer, Colonel Jack Davies. The man who approved your deployment. The man who sent you away so I could have Emily. Go look at the twins' eyes, Rachel. They don't look like me. And they don't look like you. They look exactly like the man who set you up."
The line went dead.
I slowly lowered the phone, the warm coastal breeze suddenly feeling ice-cold against my skin.
I looked down at Noah and Nora sleeping peacefully in the stroller.
I looked at Marcus, who was watching me with a look of intense concern.
"Rachel?" Marcus asked. "What is it? What did he say?"
May you like
I couldn't speak. I looked back out at the vast, dark ocean, realizing that the war wasn't over.
It was only just beginning.
